Show me your 20k Radium tanks?

I'm sorry, I just checked it. Like you said, it is called pure Actinic :)

This is the only REAL actinic T5 bulb, comparable to the Phillips 03 T8-bulb.

Here's the spectrum of it:

How about the UVL Super Actinic? Does it compare to a "real" actinic?

I think so, it also has a 420 peak. But the output below 420 is much less from the UVL compared with the Giesseman.

Thanks Todd,
If I decide to switch ballasts, who has the M80 or HQI at the best price? What is the difference between the M80 and HQI? Thanks so much for your help!

Janna

M80=HQI. The M80 is the American HQI ballast for all 250W HQI bulbs, ranging from the SE mogul Radium to all DE bulbs.

And you can see this when you compare the two bulbs in person. The Giesseman Pure Actinic is more violet, a little more akin to VHO actincs, but it's dimmerâ€"about as dim as a T5 can get. The UVL Super Actinic is brighter, and bluer, and unfortunately not nearly as nice as the company's VHO version... This is just my two cents, many prefer the brighter UVL actinic...

I'm currently running 250W SE Reeflux 10k's, one on a IceCap and the other on a Coralvue ballast, This was an experiment to see which one ran the bulbs better and I have to admit the IceCap runs them a lot better. If I were to upgrade to the Radium 20k's what ballastr would you guys recommend? I currently run a 10 hours photo period w/ my MH, how much would it have to be shortened, if any?

TIA,

right now I run two VHO super actinics on a PFO ballast and 4 80 watt T-5's on IC 660, in combo with halides. I am changing halide reflectors and have to give up either 2 of the T-5's, or the VHO setup due to space limitations. I thought it would be simpler to keep the T-5's rather than the VHO's + 2 T-5's, but I love my actinic look. Plus I will be running Radiums (1 400 on galaxy and 1 250 on HQI) so per Todd's earlier post I will not get an actinic spike from the those bulbs

Choice are
1) 2 radiums + 2 VHO Super Actinic + 2 T-5's (I'd probably go with 1 ATI blue+ and 1 ATI Aquablue Special), or

2) 2 radiums + 4 T-5's (2 ATI blue+, 1 ATI Aquablue Special and 1 ATI True Actinic or Geisemann Actinic+)

opinions? :)

Yeah, number 1...! If I already had VHO's, you would have to remove them over my dead body! The T5 actinics are just such a let-down after you have lived with VHO's. So many newer reefers just accept the T5 actinics because they have never used the VHO Super R and don't know any better. Do yourself a favor, and don't set yourself upâ€"KEEP the VHO's!

So Mark, it sounds like even the Galaxy, as good as it runs the Radiums, still produces a little of that under-driven eballast blue hue...?

Sorry about the delay Todd. :( To answer your question, I would have to agree, but I would say that it would only be 10% or so. I am huge fan of both ballasts, but I run HQI's on my tank.

TIA,

New style Ice Cap or old style? The Radiums will run on either, but better on the new styleâ€"more like on the Galaxy, a little overdriven and closer to HQI specs. But if you want to see the Radiums in their full glory, it's the HQI ballast (known as the M80 in the USA). But honestly some of the new style eballasts (particularly the Galaxy) do a pretty good job with HQI bulbs like the Radium...

I have a 75 gallon tank with 2 lumenacr III mini reflectors I was looking to go with 2-400 watt Radium bulbs does anyone think that is over kill? it will be lps on bottom and sps up top. Or should I go with 250 on a galaxy?

Its the SLS galaxy electronic ballast not really sure if its the new one?

If it were me I'd go with 250's on that size tank. The PAR will be fine for your needs and you'll have less heat to deal with.

Way to over kill. I have a 100g tank and I am able to keep sps anywhere in my tank. Not only that but I have to be careful where I put my lps cause its too much light.

Here is a picture of mine to give you an idea of what it might look like. Same set up LAIII minis 20k radiums on galaxy ballast

Thanks Mchava what are the dimensions?
Also is your picture a more direct reflection of what it looks like with your naked eye?

thanks everyone. My tank is 48"Lx20Hx24W. The radiums are 250s. As for the color thats very close to what I see, it does look a little bit dark but color its just how you see it.

Thanks for sharing Mario. I would say that your color is a very good representaion of them. Wonderful stuff :)
