Hey no fare! :eek2: ;) What city are you in - Neighbor?
I'm in Pleasanton. Was in Burlingame for 12y prior to that. Being in the Bay Area, had to build it somewhat seismically resistant (so that it won't rack too easily, etc.).

Here is a before and after shot of my 203. The steel stand was built by A.G.E. and the stand was skinned out by Ace aka Hobogato. We used magnets and brackets to hold the skin to the stand.

Can you put a small access door on the side of the hood?
That's what I am current thinking - access doors on the sides that allow me to feed from either/both ends of the tank. Not 100% sure of this yet but that's where I am leaning.

comon guys lets see some more stands. i am also building my stand starting on it tomorrow. i would like to see the structure support. i am building it for my new 225g tank. It will be a 72L X 30W x 24H

stand i plan on 72L x 30W x 40H

On a side note, does anyone have any good free/trial software they'd recommend using to design the stand? As I said, I have a good design in mind but I would like to get it up visually so I can see the proportions and figure out how wide some of the trim pieces should be. I know there are lots of nice commercial apps out there, but since this is a one-time occurrence, I'd rather invest more money in my tank!

Thanks. I will look at Google sketchup tonight and see what I can design.

Keep those shots coming!

OK, I have been mocking up the tank in Google Sketch. Pretty easy to use once you run through the basic tutorial. The basic box tools are all I'm using for the stand design.

So I started thinking about the height of the stand. Obviously I want to make sure there's room for all the equipment, but I figured there's probably some design principles to consider as well. Since the tank is 30" tall, is there an ideal "range" that the stand should be between so everything is proportional from across the room? Is there a rule of thumb or is it just a personal preference?

Let’s see some more stand photos!

Honestly, I've never liked the pre-made stands I've used because they are all too short for me. I hate having to bend over to look inside my tank. So, I have the water level of my tank a little above eye level to me and then measured down from there and told the builder that's how high I wanted the stand.

<a i would love to see this thread , anyone got a link to ithref=showthread.php?s=&postid=13715444#post13715444 target=_blank>Originally posted</a> by WLachnit
Here is my cabinetry that I built for my 300g. The stand was 4x4s with a 4x6 front header which was sheathed w/ 1/2" ply to add shear strength. The back of the stand was bolted to the wall (load bearing wall)

Very Nice! Did you make the stand yourself?

WLachnit,

What kind of woods did you use in this build? The door faces look like a natural curly maple finish. Is that right? Is the rest of the stand cherry or some other wood?

--Ed

Ed,
Yes, The raised panel doors are Western Curly Maple. The bulk of the cabinetry is Cherry with some Curly Cherry. There are also inlays of Birdseye Maple, Maple, and Wenge. I finished it with blonde shellac followed by a wipe on varnish. A couple more shots that show a bit more detail.
