Show me your Pillar's

Hello,

allready a lot of examples....

I recently set up a small tank for a colleague with only 42g.
The left side we made mainly from live rock and on the right is a very small pillar (one feet high) made of dead rocks. As basis I used an egg crate square and mounted a pillar of egg crate (three of the squares of an egg crate wide) to it. There you can fix stones with holes with wire straps as well as glue some to the construction (I used reef bond) - then you do not need to drill holes.
here you can see the pillar when completed outside the tank:

and here in the tank from the right and from front after a few days in the tank:

And a shot of the whole tank after the setup:

You may judge the size of it compared to the Tunze nano stream in the upper right corner.

regards

Markus

I don't consider alot of this "pillars"..... neither do I consider mine to be so..... but since alot of them are similar to mine, I thought I'd post anyway:

reefer2005, do you still have some the pics of your rock pillars? The ones you posted a while ago have been removed.

Here's how I made mine;

Heated 1/2" hollow filled w/ sand w/ torch for bends

I then heated an old drillbit to make holes in hollow acrylic and inserted 1/4" solid acrylic

I added hollow over the 1/4" so I could adjust as needed rather than cut base risking vibration/weakening of base.

I then attached these to flat acrylic w/ weldon for sturdyness

I did this on a sheet of ply w/ a pattern marked for overflows

thanks for all the ideas guys... here is my pillar inspired 90g tank... I had to make them wide at the base because I didn't want to drill my rocks... so they turned out more like mounds.

Wow... don't like that pic I posted... so here's a clearer one:

love your center rockwork. It looks very natural! Great job! It's inspiring me to rework my rock to get some pillars

Anyone do a pillar in a small tank like a 20 or29??

Should be easy - go buy some branch rock or seom skinny pieces of normaly rock..... cut the end square with a con-saw ...... alternatively, buy a couple of packs of aquascaping putty, and stick legs on the pieces........... you could even go so far as to get a few 8"x8" pieces of glass, and stick pieces directly to the glass - which in turn will be very stable.

Is 3/8" acrylic strong enough to support some medium sized pieces of LR? I would like to use 3/8 but I don't want to worry about it bending and snapping.

I got inspired by this thread to make a change in my tank this morning. I used 1/2" pvc to hold my rock together. I used a lot less LR this way so I had to place some of it in my sump.

This is before.

Reading this thread showed me that I didn't,t need to just make a rock pile. It should look better once the tank cycles and I am able to fill it in.

Latest update to my pillars. The starboard needs to be cleaned bc we were moving the rocks around.. but it gives you an idea =)
