Show me your Pillar's

does anyone have any pictures of pillars in a smaller sized tank? I only have a 36gal, and would like to try this.
will there be a lot of die off if the rocks are out of the water for about an hour?

Unfortunately mine is in a large tank so i can't help with the small scale... But, for the die-off, it will happen no matter what (unless you keep it wet) so just be prepared if there is a mini-cycle (seachem prime, bacteria additive, water change ready, etc). Luckily, none of that has happened to me and my rocks were out of the water for hours. Wiz ;)

I just keep buckets of SW near, or wet towels over and in shade for least amount of dieoff.
Might as well scrub any sponge off since it will die anyway from air.

Here are the two pillars I built this weekend. Pillars make up the legs of the arch.

Hey Tryx - I built some small pillars and a small arch for my 40 breeder using acrylic rods and Marineland epoxy.

I reworked my aquascaping about 2 - 1/2 years ago with PVC rods, etc. making four towers. Here is a picture of the left side of the towers.

and another of the center and right side.

Here is the tank about 10 months later

Can you show me how you went about stacking the rocks and if possible a picof how each rock looks seperatly so I can get an idea of how you did this amazing job.

Thanks for the compliment! Unfortunately, no individual pics as i needed it done and the rockwork in the tank ASAP. How i did it was pretty simple. First off was to have the materials ready (rods, drills, containers, etc), then i took all of the rocks out and used the biggest pieces as the foundation on the left and right pillars (the middle isn't a pillar but a huge "spaceship" rock supported on both sides) and drilled holes through pieces i felt fit correctly (luckily i had many flat pieces) and cut the rod to size. If you need more help, just shoot me a PM and i can guide you. Wiz ;)

I guess I will just have to find some more flat pieces like you have.

Its not mandatory, but is the best to use IMO and gives you more area than normal pieces of rock. If you need, i have closer images of the pillars but not during construction.

W00t for the cookin' Iowa tank Aaron !

That's a great photo what's the lighting and camera?

Better late than never right?

Lighting is a 250w DE Phoenix 14k with four ATI Blue+ T5's. Camera is nothing special, Nikon D-40 with an 18-55mm lens.

Hello,

want to show you two pillars I made last week.
This one was to go in a small show tank with 50g
picture.php

The second one was as a showcase for a 29g tank
a picture from the left side

and the same from the right

It is not so easy to make pictures of these pillars to really show how the 3D look is they have in reality.
So they are a lot more "structured" than it looks on the pictures.

Markus

Hello,

here is another one...

the thing is not that the pillars have a very special or spectacular looking;
it was more the size of the tank which dictated the layout.
It is a tank which is 8.2 feet high, 4 feet long and 1.3 feet!!!! wide (internal measures)
The inital set up collapsed and I was asked to repair it.

The problem beside the small width was that the only access to the tank is through a hole in the ceiling measuring 2 feet x 1.3 feet.

So the pillards had to be made outside small enough to fit not only trough the service hole but also leave place to clean the windows, swimming space for the fish and also for corals.
They should be very solid and must be able to be lowered and lifted into and out of the tank with a rope.

So I prepared constructions from PVC and egg crate and double fixed each stone separatly to it. And they should only be arround one feet in width.

In the end the tank holds now 2 pillars which are 2.3 feet high and a smaller one on top of them.
