Well done guys. You should all be proud.

I find it difficult to distinguish between A. granulosa and A.loripes. How do you distinguish between two Acropora species?

Thanks

usally loripes has a row of coralites alinged from the middle too bottom until you see the row of coralites on a colony then you may see what i mean hope this helps a little

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate it. I have looked at pictures of both corals provided by Veron and still get confused.

This is A. granulosa (http://coral.aims.gov.au/factsheet.jsp?speciesCode=0033)

This is A. loripes (http://coral.aims.gov.au/factsheet.jsp?speciesCode=0042)

and this is my frag (is it granulosa, loripes or neither?):

Oooweeee! Thoes branches are tasty looking oldude! Nice growth formation on thoes colonies, thanks for sharing :)

Nice corals, Greg!.

I reckon the top is Loripes and bottom is Granulosa?….
Love 'em both!.

What do you keep your phos and nitrate at currently?.

Thanks
Mo

This is a beautiful coral that I totally forgot about :) Now I have to search down a frag. I don't see this piece around much in my area anymore.

Discus heckel, the photo is blurry and im no expert but it looks like a Granny! Our sps have so "morphed"thru captivity it can be very hard to tell same species from tank to tank lighting, flow, placement etc..look at A.Carolina,A.Shurashoni,A.Lokani, same difficuties at times distinguishing between and i could go on btw nice score on Granny hope it turns into a great colony for you!

As you say, I will cherish it whatever it may be.

Thanks - my latest colony has very short branches and is a painfully slower grower.
Wow Greg, those purple tips are awesome
Thanks

Thanks Mo. I have several other "Loripes" pieces and their growth structure is different than this particular one so I was just assuming it was granulosa but you may be correct - there are a lot of similarities between the two species. Especially once they get colony size.

Regarding phos & nitrates - to be honest I don't bother testing for those. I don't do any sort carbon dosing anymore so my system is far from being a ULNS (especially with my bioload) however in my experience having some detectable levels gives me deeper colors where the with zeovit or the like colors are more pastel. That said, it can be a delicate balance because - again in my experience high phosphate level browns out a lot of the sps.

I am resurrecting this old thread, hoping that there will be more pictures:

This was mine last year:

It is looking like this now:

It is growing painfully slowly.

Granny's should be named "the coral of the many virtues"... like patience, skills, good reefer etc :)

Welldone bulent,it seems you have all these skills:)
That thing is a really slow grower indeed but when it does it's soooo rewarding:inlove:
Thanks for the pics!

Does that monti give it hard time or you cut it off when it reaches?
