"To date, no successful, closed cycle, captive-breeding program has occurred (ie getting a generation of captive-raised sea dragons to breed). "

Melbourne Aquarium in Australia are the only facilities in the world to have successfully bred weedy sea dragons in captivity

Not exactly.

Today I was visiting a large fish farm (food fish) one of the guys who was working before for a large public aquarium had a t shirt of the Dragons and apprantly these are his fav fish.
He was telling me a university in America managed to breed them successfully, I can ask him again if it's interesting anybody.

hi stunreefer, thanks for confirming. I'm located in the Philippines. Got that during a trip abroad, just couldn't resist its beauty. It's in my tank right now with a trio of Hawaiian Flames and a couple of unidentified fairy wrasses plus a few other fishes.

Regarding availability fo rare and exotic fishes, I don't know but I've been able to travel within Asia, from Indo to Singapore and Hong Kong and others, yes there are some rare fishes but I doubt if there would be that gets shipped here as to the US and Europe. Most likely if there would be one, then I assume it would be to Japan.

I've also been lucky to have access to some of the bigger exporters here in the Philippines and yes from time to time they would have some rare fishes that they come across but they usually will not sell them to us locals even if we say that we will match the prices for export.

I've been looking around with LFS's in the region for a Gem Tang but have yet to find one because they say that the exporters prefer shipping to the US and Japan as they get better prices there. Same response I get when asking for a pair each of Genicanthus personatus and takeuchii. So not that easy here, well at least in SE Asia.

You may find yourself a Gem Tang. That is a relatively easy fish to get as long as you have the coin. Whereas the chances of you getting Takeuchii or Personatus is .0000001%-0%. If one of those fish happens to be caught their are many Asian collectors with huge amounts of money ready and waiting. Tim

Epic thread. Seeing all these rare fish makes me drool. The LFS around me never get anything rare. Only thing I've seen that I would consider rare enough for RC is a small black tang, and that was over 6 years ago. I need to move somewhere with bad@ss LFS. Great pics everyone!

Tim - did you get that pm I sent you?

great thread indeed some fish here are just amazing .

I'm wondering were you guys get all these rare fish from.

I am looking for some rare fish myself without any sucess , not alot of nice rare fish come to canada or at least that I know of.

Problem with Canada is that many districutors where many of us get our "rare" fish from don't have cites to ship them to Canada. Many of the fish posted aren't rare per say, just expensive, or hard to come by. A rare fish is more like a personatus or teuckuechi. Tim

here's a weird flame angel i received from the marshalls. The collector thought it was a hybrid, but i believe it is just an unusual color morph. It is super sweet looking. Instead of black lines it has darker red lines, and barely any blue/black on the tail fins. Definitely a unique flame (second one they caught in 25 years!)

Thanks for clearing that up? I do believe there are restrictions placed on importing fish by the Canadian government. Kevin have you tried to order fish from one of the sponsers here on RC? Obviously I have no clue what I am talking about with the CITES thing so maybe do some research and find out what the restrictions are. If there aren't any, many of can direct you to where to find some of these fish.

Hey Zem, Nice Flame. I still like Flames with many dark vertical bars for the contrast. Now will that Flame go for big money? Doesn't do much for me. What did the collector think it was loriculus x bispinosa? Looks like a color variation to me.

so sedro what you are sayin is that no marine fish is on the CITES list then there should be no restrictions right???
and nice flame btw ,I've seen misbars but that one has darker red bars not black or blue bars ,I've never seen that but I don't think its an hybrid either just a color morph.

and I've ordered many times online but it was either from members or jlaquatics wich is based in canada so they don't bother with all the paperwork. I'll take a look on the governement's website and clear that up.

I've found this page :
http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/anima/aqua/impe.shtml
but they stay quite unclear on the subject.

Kevin,

No, I am sure the Canadian government has regulations on the importation of wildlife just as does the US. When a shipment comes in to the US it must clear customs and US Fish and Wildlife. You have to be permitted with US F&W to import livestock - not anyone can just have something shipped to them from say Indonesia.

CITES is an international agreement that regulates the trade of endangered species between nations. If you are importing/exporting a CITES listed species, you must have the appropriate CITES paperwork allowing you to do it.

yes, it will fetch a sizeable amount. It is really neat to see in person. Next to a normal flame there is a very drastic difference. I believe there is a picture of one in the new angel fish book. It is a color morph rather than a hybrid (IMO). i was hoping is was flame x coral beauty which would have been sweet!

Hey. Well the only reason I think it may be a hybrid because it looks like the fish has a shorter and rounder body like a bispinosa. I must post this gem again because I think this is one of my favorite color morphs ever. I could only imagine what type of money this fish would get. i have spent some coin on fish but I'm sure this one would be way out of my league. Tim

It looks like a better version of the Marquesas morphs, but the fact it came from Marshal is pretty cool.

There have been some interesting clownfish hybrids going into Japan. Not sure where's they are going, but very unique... Not sure if you've seen that PNG Maroon Morph that was collected, but the front band is beautiful

ah, the blue potters. Beautiful. I heard from a collector who caught one and kept it it started to turn back into more reddish/orange like a normal potters. The waikiki aquarium has a nice potters in their display tank it has a slightly orange face but the rest is blue and black.
