forever with proper care and nutrition, well off course until they go to fish heaven. When raising juvi's to adults, thats when you usually don't get the really vivid colors of a wild caught specimen. That one that is pictured is the perfect size to get because it almost done changing. The larger and older the angel the more difficult it will be acclimate into captivity. Mainly because it has because accustomed to swimming on a huge reef for a longer period of time and their diet has changed from algaes and other items, to almost strictly sponge. Tim

Hi Tim,
Are u talking from personal experience?
Can you take a Red Sea / xmas adult P.imperator and keep that orange-red tail without losing the color over time?

Yes I am talking from personal experience and from those who have kept them for decent amount of time. 2 years plus. You need to keep water pristine. 10ppm nitrate, 0 is far better. All other water parameters in the ideal zone, ie, 0 Nitrate, 0 Amm, 8.2, proper alk, steady temp, and salinity. Secondly, those I have seen have success keeping the colors vibrant feed heavily with fresh foods with supplements such as Selcon, Zoe, etc. Also many Emps or large angels will hold parasites or other ailments that aren't visible. They just live with them, as they would in the wild. Very important to fully quarantine the fish and make sure you cover all your bases. The obviously make sure you don't introduce any parasites or aggressors. Though if you have a really well adjusted Emperor, the chances of another fish coming into the tank and being the aggressor is unlikely. I forget who it is, either Campbell or Triggerfish. They raised a juvi Indo Emp to adulthood and the adult had the vibrant color of a wild caught adult. Tim

I agree , Large angels are carrying alot of parasites, seriously loads of them.
Been looking in a microscope MANY times of a freshly dead cut open angels and as we say here its a "safari".

From experince of some close friends and reefers with xmas and red sea adult emperors, the red-orange tail wont hold the color.
The vibrant colors will.

I hope triggerfish and campbell will tell us from their own experience.

I was under the imperssion that these fish cant hold the almost red tail color in captivity.

I grew my emperor from 2.5" to where he is now 9"+. I am not sure about the orange tail, my belief was that they maintained the orange tail in captivity, but have never owned a xmas imperator.

Below is a pic of my guy and his colors are among the best that I have seen in any wild caught big daddy.

Completely off topic (sorry - saw it mentioned above), does SELCON go bad? I bought some a month or so and forgot about it... I've never used it and its just in a cupboard...is it supposed to be refrigerated?

TIA!

Hey Gasman. Usually I think those yellow tang color morphs are ugly, that that one is quite attractive. What happened to it? To the best of my knowledge the picture of the masked angel is from Waikiki Aquarium. Man I can't wait to go there in February. Diving with Rob and Les, going to the wholesalers, aquariums, surfing, cocktails, beaches, okay I'll probably be moving to Hawaii in February.

I don't refrigerate my Selcon. I just don't let it get really hot or blasted with light. As a suggestion. I dip algae sheets in a selcon and garlic liquid mix. I get them damp and then I hang it to dry. Once completely dry again I then put on a clip and feed the fish. This way you don't get that cloud of selcon and lose all of the nutrients if you just put it in wet.

Okay back to more pics!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Later, Tim

Nice....saddle back/4 spot butterfly hybrid? And a I-have-no-idea anthias (in either pic)!

I really like this butterfly. May look into getting one. I have been eyeing that Marcellae Butterfly on DD. It's been there forever. I called them to see if they could drop the price alittle and it was a no go. Tim

Tim, the P guyanensis is found really deep, I've looked for them and never seen one shallower then 260 ft. They are tough to bring up to the surface from that depth. P aya is almost the same (one less black stripe) and a lot less money.

The butterfly you aren't sure about is a kleins, and the basslet is a black striped basslet, Liopropoma latifaciatum.
