Different kinds can be kept together. For instance a Yellow Tang and Regal Tang should get along fine as they are in different Genuses. But if you was to add a Yellow and then a Purple there will most likely be issues.

ANyone have any experience with the Clown Tang in a mixed reef...including other tangs! Looking for info like how big was your system, what other tangs were housed together, ect.

I used to house one in a 40, it was fine for the 4 months it was in there. Baring it mind that this was about 2.5" big. But one day he just died. You'd be lucky to get one that lives past 6 months. I had no other tangs and it wasn't agressive but all the other fish were around the same size. Although it was in a 40 (this was before I knew much about Tangs it was an impulse buy) they need a big tank. They get the same size as the Sohal and have the same nature. So if its for your 60 or 75 then i dont recommend it as they dont live very long, get big and can be vey agressive. I understand this may sound a little hypocrytical as mine was in a 40 but like i say he was very small and I hadn't really researched about Tangs so I didn't know how big it could get and how agressive.

Not for the nano tanks, I am planning a 450 gallon mixed reef...so I thought it might be a big enough system to handle several tangs...

I believe concern over the clown tang's poor success rate in captivity has something to do with the manner in which they are collected from the wild.

Maybe someone else can comment further?

A 450g would be fine but its not just tank size that should be taken into consideration. They dont do well in captivity and like Twsifty mentioned it could be to do with the way they are collected. Cyanide is something that comes to mind.

Yeah, I have been reading more and it seems that this fish is best kept in the ocean! No reason to take the chances.

A local LFS had 2 Sohals a local reefer surrendered because his tank was too small...they LFS was asking $50 each! WIsh the 450 was up and running, they would die in a few days in my overcrowded 75g! Seems like both the Sohal and CLown run into the same issues with tank size and care level.

The Sohal seems to do well when kept in the right size tank. They are actually quite hardy.
