Simple, Shallow, SPS Rimless Tank Build

Old tank!

Old tank!

Found an iPad pic of our old tank in CA! :)

We had a purple tang, chevron tang, flame wrasse trio, male lineatus wrasse, Helfrichi firefish, tailspot blenny, Midas blenny, neon goby, yasha goby, and a male green mandarin dragonet! The shelf on the right was filled with nice/collector zoas and palys and I think I sold the entire 15"x15" shelf for almost $3K!! :D

Wish I could have the shelf back, and the rics garden on the left, and the blastos garden under the shelf!

New clowns!

New clowns!

Reefbrite LEDs just came on and our new black ice clowns I got from malady yesterday are already hosting the frogspawn! :)

Sorry for the blurry iPad pic

Well one of our cleaner gobies died! The larger one kept harassing him/her since day one. So much for being a "bonded" pair :(

Current fish:

Midas blenny
tailspot blenny
Cleaner hybrid goby
Black ice clownfish pair
Female green mandarin (we installed a refugium, will be making pods compartments in the tank, and ordering lots of pods from "getyourpods.com" to keep her happy)
Caribbean black cap basslet
Randall's shrimp goby
Red firefish

We are still deciding on which tang species to add!

As for corals, we currently have a fat head dendro, a purple tip frogspawn that the clownfish host! , Orange riccordeas x10, mini colony of Cornbred event horizon acans, and a Cornbred rainbow cherry chalice. The only SPS we have so far in the tank is a frag of ponape birdsnest. We also bought an Oregon tort, red planet, strawberry shortcake, yellow suharsonoi, and an unnamed yellow Acro with red polyps that Living Reef is currently holding until after the New Year!

Getting this simple structure on Monday! It will go behind the main tonga branches.

Dimensions: 20"Lx3"Wx8"H

I will use only 3 or 4 of the frag plugs to give corals plenty of room. I'll probably put a red planet on the left side since RP grows pretty fast and needs high light to get that nice green coloration and a pink lemonade on the other side. And perhaps two other acros that need high PAR in the middle structure.

Could be cool if it would swing like a scale, as a coral colony gets bigger on one side it goes down and brings smaller colony on the other side up :)

Told my wife it's my last BRS order this year haha (yeah right)

Got my Hanna phosphate, more filter socks, 2-part, 10lbs of dry rock, float valves for my water change station, fragging and maintenance tools.

Haha that would be cool! I just need to make sure I put corals with similar growth rate and patterns on both sides!

I'm finally going to pick up my frags at Living Reef this weekend! I've been so busy (and lazy) the past few weeks.

Will be adding:
Red Planet
Yellow Suharsonoi
Yellow Acro with red polyps mariculture (hopefully it will hold it's color)
Strawberry shortcake
Oregon Tort

Also adding a Sunburst Anthias that we bought at Ocean Blue on Wed. We are still going to add a tang but not sure which one. Any thoughts? Yellow tang? Chevron tang? Achilles tang?! (Hehe)

Final fish list:

Tailspot Blenny
Midas Blenny
Cleaner Goby
Randall's Goby
Yellow Clown Goby
Green Dragonet
Ruby Red Dragonet (in six months or so)
Blackcap Basslet
Sunburst Anthias
Red Firefish
?????????? Tang

(My wife love gobies, blennies, and dragonets! :D)

We did our first 10 gallon water change earlier this evening since setting up our tank. I'm pretty sure I have low or zero phosphate and nitrate since I've only used my hammerhead algae magnet twice in over a month.

I've also decided that I'm not going to dose Zeovit or other amino acid products just yet. I've had great success in the past with consistent maintenance, water change, and daily testing, so that's what I'm going to do with our current setup.

Sump

Sump

Haven't had the time to organize the cords. One BRS deluxe reactor will be hooked up on the left, above the sump.

Right side

Right side

I still need to hook up the doser. I put a 20" box fan just in case. The ATO reservoir is 14 gallons.

Added these last night and I'm already getting some crazy PE right now, esp the red planet and Oregon tort.
