Hi Sip,
My tank is mostly LPS/Soft with a few SPS at the top. I think i am where you were back in March of 2012. Since then your tank has morphed from an LPS/Soft with some SPS like mine to a mostly SPS/Zoa tank. I personally love the new colors but wondering what steps did you take to make the transition and what mistakes did you make. Hopefully my tank will look like yours in 18-24 months... Going to Frag swap tomorrow to pick ups some polyps and Zoas. Thank you Sir, Matthew
Hi, matt.
First of all, thanks for reading my thread. I know it was a long read.
Second, steps that I had taken was eliminating majority of the softies because by this time, they were big enough to touch other corals, and was at constant chemical warfare. Leathers produce toxins that can be fatal to other lives in the tank and they had to go. For example, for the longest time, i had no polyp extension at all on my sps. Marvin (nivram) and mark (marke) will still remember my endless rants about that. Once I eliminated the softies and upped the efficiency of carbon running through my water (got a tlf 150 instead of bags) and it started to clear up the water very well.
Third, I had to get my water quality in check. Keep the holy trinity of reef keeping. Alk, calcium and magnesium and never get complacent on testing for alk at all.
Also keep your nitrate and phosphates down. Nitrate, low as possible. P04, I try to keep it from .03 to .04. Too low, I noticed sps losing color and zoanthids not growing as fast.
Fourth, good flow and good lighting and placement of corals
Make sure you have good lights that can produce good spectrum and good amount of par all over the tank and place corals accordingly. Also keep in mind many sps love light and flow so I had to make sure that they get what they needed.
In all in all, we are trying our best to mimic mother nature so try just that!
I constantly bug other gurus like rogger, eddie and mark and til this day learn few new things in daily basis.
If you have any other questions or want to see my giant frag tank in person, feel free to ask.
