I am currently running an AquaC Urchin PRO skimmer in my 90g+30 setup. I have been eye-ing the ASM G2 as an upgrade...my questions are:

1. Will it reduce algae growth on the glass? I now magnet scrub daily.
2. will the water be clearer?
3. what other visble differences will i notice with such an upgrade?

thanks

1 possibly
2 possibly
3 maybe...

try running ozone with a better skimmer and you will see a difference... then you will really begin to see clear water...

how about a Deltec...:D

more heat due to bigger pump :)

Use carbon for clear water :)

I'm not sure of the benefits of moving from urchin to asm g2; but I know the above is true. :)

LOL!!!!! Hahaha....

lol well thats the truth.. unless he uprades to a Deltec or Bk...:D

I have about the same setup and have had an Aquac Urchin before. Do the upgrade and if I were you go with a G3, you will never look back.

Just general advice (if you haven't tried it before....) try cutting your current feedings down to 1/2 or even 1/4 of what you are feeding currently - that should also have an effect on the first two.....

Have you tried a Mag 5 (or equivalent) pump on the urchin pro? I've known a lot of users of Remora Pro's and they all used mag 5's for the best performance

Do you plan on this 90 gallon being your last tank? If so I would suggest something a little bigger skimmer than a G2. I had one on my 75 and would rate it as an OK skimmer for an LPS and softie tank. If a bigger tank is in your future in the next year or two. Stick it out with the Urchin for now and get a real skimmer later. A third option is to consider the Octopus Needlewheel 200. Currently this skimmer is by far the best bang for the buck. And performance is better than simular priced ASM skimmers costing $100 more.

I'm with Greg. It seems to me the skimmers you've mentioned are too close to warrent any extra cash spent. I haven't seen the Octopus skimmers in action but the hoopla people are making of them has to be considered. Its a proven design.

Get the asm G3X, the G2 is too small for a 90....mine kicks butt. I replaced a Lifereef skimmer using a mag 9.5 with the ASM G3X....it pulls out in a day what took the lifereef over a week. I noticed improved colors in my SPS after 2 weeks of changing skimmers.

Well I have a 90 w/ 40sump and ran a Aqau c for about 3 weeks before I switched to a G2. It was a huge diff, I'd say its 5x better. About 4-5 months ago I switch to a G3 and got 3x the skimmate I was getting on the G2.

any personal feedback on a pump upgrade on a g2?
i was running a g1x for a while and was getting good amounts of nasty, dark skimmate but when the pump fried and i switched over to the g2, i noticed it hasnt been pulling the same volume per time in use. it seems like either the pump is undersized after using the same pump on the g1x.

We have a Urchin Pro on our 100g FOWLR here at work. I put a mag 7 upgrade on it inside its skimmer box. Its a loud skimmer for what it is.

I have an 8-2 skimmer with the needlewheel on my 90g and its almost silent ( just a very minimal pump hum )

For those that do not understand what I am talking about when discussing the Octopus skimmer. Remember this skimmer's retail price is under $200. The pump is the same pump as the oceanrunner, just renamed. The ASM is just not in the same class and that is why I say it is the best bang for the buck. If it is too big, you could consider one of the smaller models.

Weird my lifereef with a mag 9.5 needs to be dumped 2 times a week sometimes!

well...the problem i have is the skimmer compartment in my sump will only accomodate a ASM G2 size..and that is a tight fit.

i think i will wait till i get a bigger setup and then spend the cash on a g3\g4.
thanks
