Slakker's Eclipse 12 Build Thread (Sorry, 56kers)

Nope, not that I know of either. I ditched the hood completely and threw on the 175W halide setup.

The frogspawn is inflating slowly but surely and the shrimp seems to be leaving it alone for now, however I'm really not convinced I want a shrimp in my tank that has a history of picking at my corals...

i got a frogspawn with about 5 heads for about a week now and he inflated fully the first day. I got 130w PC in a 26G but i like metal halides so much now and i love SPS yet i cant keep any:(. I got a cleaner shrimp and hes on the other side of the tank from the frogspawn. He doesnt come too close to it and my false perc hasnt hosted my xenia, GSP, or frogspawn yet. Im thinking of adding another smaller true perc into the tank so they can mate in the future. what you guys think?

Hey Tyler,

Great job! Your tank is looking really good. Question: what is the partially buried white thing that the frag is on top of in the zoa picture on page two of this thread? Is it what the frag is attached to or a future home for a burrowing critter? I’ve seen you give a lot of good advice, in many threads. Thank you. -Trey

ZooZ, sounds like a good plan. I've got a pair of A. Ocellaris in hopes that they'll spawn for me someday :)

Trey, thanks :) It's slow goings, but it's coming along. The object in question is a piece of PVC pipe that I am using as a bit of a makeshift frag plug. I didn't have anything else available so I drilled a hole in the PVC, glued the frag to some rigid airline tubing, and put that through the hole. I'll then simply remove the tubing from the hold and glue the frag into the rocks (once I find a place where it's reasonably happy, that is)

I'm having trouble finding a direction/angle for the MJ900 that doesn't dig up my sand, so I'm thinking about maybe switching it out for a Koralia 1. It's almost twice the flow, but I'm wondering if maybe the Koralia's wider flow pattern would be easier to manage.

Night shot (with flash) Not the highest quality, but you can see the frogspawn in there all tucked in for the night ;)

And something I think every clown owner can sympathize with...hosting the MagFloat

Good spot or bad spot for the frogspawn? I still haven't really figured out this coral placement thing. The flow whips the tentacles around relatively randomly, but I thought I read somewhere that they liked lower flow areas...

Any thoughts?

I think its in a good spot. I got my frogspawn in moderate current and its been doing pretty good. The frogspawn is near the mag float so maybe the clowns will discover the frogspawn and host it so 2 good reasons to keep it there. ;)

I've heard good things about using superglue gel. It sounds like I can just apply the glue to the base of the skeleton, and then quickly just submerse it and stick it to the rock. The water will cause a film to form over the wet glue, but if you press down it should break through the film and adhere to the rock as well.

That's the theory anyway...I'm curing some smaller rock pieces right now, so I may just wait until those are ready and glue the frogspawn onto one of those.

I'm also thinking about selling/trading off my larger "bridge" piece of rock in favor of some smaller/more interesting pieces...I guess i'll wait to see what other aquascaping I can come up with with the pieces I have first.

The Frogspawn today (the white balance on this camera is terrible...the 14k isn't this blue...lol)

LoLL that pic looks like 400w 20k...what name brand glue you using...im going to glue my corals in better places then they already are but need something to adhere it. Heres a few pics of my tank..i finally made a photobucket account... i hope this work

Tank looks great :)

I wish my Zoa's would open...I think I may have some of those little snails that feed on zoanthids. I wonder if they'll starve if I remove the zoa...

they still havent opened up?? Some of my polyps on my zoas didnt open but then I seen some small snails in my tank that i didnt buy so i took them out of the tank and my zoas look better now. Take the snails out if you see them and move your zoanthids somewhere else see if it helps. Oh yea and anything you would do differernt with my setup? or suggest?

I'll work on removing the snails as I see them in there, seems like the best idea. I just can't help but feel that there are probably more that I can't see...I guess I'll find out though.

I was going to buy some "Aquaman Blue" zoa's from a local reefer, but if the ones that I have now are failing I don't feel right adding another frag till I figure it out. He said he'll probably have some for me again soon, so it'll be cool to get some blue in there :)

This just arrived in the mail today...the AirWaterIce Compact ReefKeeper.

This should make things in my tank sparkle!

Yea i hope those zoanthids start opening up soon. Blue zoanthids will add some colour. I want some more colours in my tank as well like red. Saw this Red gonipora today at my LFS for 40 but the rock it was on is huge. I also read that if a clown hostes the coral it will make the coral die.

Maybe when you use that new filter unit the zoanthids will open....you never know. Where did you get it from if i may ask? Let us know how istallation goes!!

My tank was two weeks old when I added Zoo's, and they opened right up to my halide. Something is either bothering your corals or you have a high level of iodine and/or copper in your system.

You should also dose calcium.

My $0.02

RO/DI unit is from the AirWaterIce website. It's been successfully installed under the kitchen sink (not the most convenient placement, but since I'll be living here with my parents until I finish my bachelor's degree it'll have to do :))

Reefman13, I agree with you completely. However, I've been using RO water from the store this whole time, and I don't dose anything, so I don't think that Iodine/Copper is the problem (Granted, I have no tests for either, so it very well could be). I'm inclined to think they're afflicted with some sort of pest.

TDS Readings
Tap water: 369
Water dispensed from refrigerator: 229 (just for fun)
RO Water from store: 12

I haven't tested the RO/DI yet, but I'm presuming that it will be zero :)

Edit: I pulled out what appears to be one of those sundial snails that cause problems with Zoa's...I guess I'll just watch over the next several nights and pull out any little snails I might see and hope that helps the zoa's. I've got some Kent Iodine solution, and I've heard of people using Lugol's iodine as a dip treatment for Zoa's...would the Kent stuff work the same way?
