So I bought a purple tang with ich

I purchased a purple tang at a really good price. I went to pick it up 3 days later and it has ich. The store owners will credit me if the fish dies, but I will try to get it healthy in quarantine. My friend says he's never have done it. Right now it is being treated with copper. I am thinking I'll do TTM after that. Thoughts/opinions please. Would you have bought it? Would you ever put it in display after treatment? Can ich ever really be gone?

I would not have taken it home from the store if it had ich.

How good of a price? If they are going to credit you if it dies, then I would have definitely bought it. Ich can definitely gone. If you continue the copper treatment then follow up with a ttm, it'll be good!

How is it eating?

$70 for a purple tang is a great deal. Mine was about that size when I got him a couple years ago and he was about twice the $$. Personally, a fish having ich doesn't really bother me. In most cases, it's fairly easy to treat in QT before putting the fish in your main tank. I wouldn't hesitate on buying a fish I really wanted just because of that. Especially if it's fairly hardy like a purple tang. Anyway, just my $.02.

Thank you for your reply Gimpyfin. I think I can do this! My only concern is that I'll actually be traveling to Portland in six week. But with a 20 day copper and 12 day TTM that will give me two weeks before my trip. I can find a friend to babysit him the rest of his quarantine.

I would skip the copper and just start TTM. It will all be over in less than two weeks and then you can watch him for 4 weeks. You can put him in the DT before you leave knowing ich is gone. Dose prazi on the 2nd and 4th, and last transfer and you have a lot covered.

Almost every fish I pick up from a LFS is assumed to have ich. SO just because you don't see it doesnt mean its not there.

Cryptocaryon is usually not a big deal if the infection is not too severe and it is actually Cryptocaryon and not something more dangerous like Amyloodinium, Brooklynella or the like that sometimes can mimic the appearance of Cryptocaryon.
In a case of a confirmed Cryptocaryon infection, especially with a tang, I would however start TTM or hyposalinity treatment right away.
If the diagnosis is not entirely clear copper may be a viable option, but it isn't really good for fish and doesn't treat everything.

Ok, odd, but Im in Portland and also just bought a purple tang that now appears to have ich in my main tank. I dont have a QT tank setup currently.

What do I do? LFS said just keep feeding good and grave me a uv reactor to hook up.

Everything I read says treat in QT....which is great, but not my situation.

Weird, 3 people from Portland in this thread. UVs won't do much for ich, IMO (Especially if its a turbo twist.) First, it will only potentially kill what's in the free floating stage. Second, you have to have a UV with sufficient power at an appropriate flow rate through the reactor (Ich requires a much stronger dose of UV than algae, bacteria, and basic parasites to kill.) So even with those criteria met, you might reduce its numbers, but it won't rid you of it.

In your situation w/ no QT, you might be able to keep it at bay with low stress and keeping the fish eating and healthy. Though, it could pop up at a later date, so just something to keep in mind.

I bought my PT years ago with an ich discount. Pretty hardy fish and should recover just fine with treatment. A the time my favored approach was cupramine, though now it's chloroquine phosphate.

I have done the same thing with Petco. Got a 3.5 inch PT for $69. I made sure it was eating and once he was, it went straight into TTM. He has turned out to be a beauty.
