So it begins, part two (120G)

Thanks, he has a real interesting little character. I'll post a picture later of his big sister, a 6 yo Boxer female we rescued.

Preliminary sump layout. Since I made this graphic, I have decided to lower the baffles to 1'-0".

I thought I would bump my thread even though I have little to report.

Current status:
Bottle neck to this build is the stand. The 120G will be going in my home office. Since the desk and tank will be 75% of the furniture in the room, I want them to match. I been looking at desks to replace my ghetto current one and think I finally made my decision. If all goes well the order will be placed by the end of this week. My goal is to stylize the aquarium stand to look similar to the new desk. I will not be exact or even the same materials but if I can match the main colors and some of the hardware I will be happy.

I have purchased the lumber for my stand frame and started cutting sections, but it is still not completed. Hopefully be this weekend pictures will be posted of a completed frame.

I might be ordering an AquaController Jr from Marine Depot while they still have them on sale. If I do this, it will be in the next day or so.

That leaves the return pump, baffles for my sump, overflow pipes, and sand.

It looks great.

As Radone said, I would also consider losing the peg legs in the corners of the stand - it takes away from the room inside the cabinet and puts a great deal of weight in specific spots on the floor as opposed to distributing across a large area.

Looking forward to seeing some new pictures.

You sure have been patient. I think I would have just tossed it on some upside down buckets by now.

I think the aquacontroller would make a great addition.

Let me tell you, up until recently I have been satisfied with the little progress I have made knowing that every piece is getting me closer. However, the closer I get the more excited I get about it so patients is becoming an issue. I knew this when I started to think your bucket stand idea might not be such a bad idea. :)

BTW, ACJr was ordered this evening.

yeah really, I do know the feeling on that one, I have been building my stand since september but I know me well enough to know I have to continue to be patient and do it right or it will agravate me from now on. LOL

But I plan to do some painting tonight after chat and hopefully by friday it will be ready for curing and I can start tearing the old one down the next time I get home.

Finally some progress. My dad helped me with this project on fathers day. What a great gift ey? Letting him help me build something. LOL

Anyhow, the frame is now nearly complete. I need one more 1x3 to double up on the back of the bottom shelf and the wood for the shelf. Any recommendations on what to use to seal the wood? Then comes the skin, the part I been dreading...

carb I used KILZ paint primer/ sealer on mine not only does it prevent mold and mildew growth but it is white so it britens up the inside also....looks good...

I like the Valspar HIGH GLOSS paint from Lowes. Also the Valspar High Hiding Primer. I used this paint to paint kitchen cabinets over 10 years ago and they still look good. Even the sink cabinet and I had kids doing dishes and water all down the front of the sink for years ( lol Kids) but anyway it has held up so good that I painted my canopy and the inside of my stand with it a few years ago and it has done wonderful. No problems til it actually sat full of water for several days while I was out of town, ( a whole nother story I won;t go into here) and way the paint is still good in the old stand but did let the bottom bow after sitting with a couple of inches of water in the cabinet for at least 3 days before I got home and found it. Still that is what I am using on my new stand.

progress is a good thing... patience is good too.. not enough of that in this hobby.. as far as paint goes use high gloss latex or kilz if you don't want to go all out and use a 2 part epoxy paint (the best)

This is probably a dumb question but here it goes anyhow.

I picked up some of the KILZ Premium primer, this is the one that is supposed to help fight off mold ect., and I'm wondering if I still need to paint over it.

Not much of an update but this build is still creeping forward. Picked up an Eheim 1260 for my return today. Hope to have the dividers in my sump next week.

Just a picture I snapped this evening as I started to piecing items together. I need to get the baffles in my sump and all of the necessary plumbing.

Build is starting to move forward finally. I finished up the sump this weekend. Not the cleanest silicon job ever, but I'm okay with it for my first. BTW, my cost in the sump is $80. That is for the tank, baffles, & silicon.

Looking good
I would paint over the Kilz it will only protect it more

Just an opinion but I would've spaced baffles a little bit further apart ;)

Thanks Romeo. I did end up painting it, forgot what I used though.

On the sump, I think those baffles are 3/4" apart. It is pretty tight, but that thing is 18" wide. Also, as a test I took a Mag 9.5 and had it flowing 100% into the fuge section. I feared it might overspill the bubbletrap but it never did. So I was flowing 950gph through it and at my current cals I will never see more than 450 with the pumps I will be using.

Do you have some other concerns with the baffles being close together? I did it just to maximize space.
