Hello out there in fishland, I am new to the hobby...but very enthusiastic about learning all I can. Just started cycling my 55 gallon tank filled with cured live rock and substrate...can someone talk to me about ammonia.... specific gravity for new saltwater looks great, as well as the temp....but don't have my test kit yet, and want to know if my rock will survive for a few days until I get it. The tank is clearing and all looks well...only been about 24 hours. Thanks to whoever replies.

In both instances, there's a twilight where everything remains seemingly unchanged, and it is in such twilight that we must be aware of change in the air, however slight, lest we become unwitting victims of the darkness." -- William O. Douglas, longest serving Justice (36 years) U. S. Supreme Court.

Your rock will be fine. Actually it will help you through the cycle quicker. Get some test kits, salifert makes the best IMO, and check your water frequently. Welcome to the hobby and

If you're worried about the rock, a few water changes, perhaps 15g or so each, would remove some of the ammonia, if there is any, and any other toxic chemicals that might be present.

Just checking...do you think I should do a small water change already...I have some saltwater curing, but it has only been 24 hours since I started cycling the tank...thanks SusiQ

Well, you could try it. Really, an ammonia test is the only way to know for sure. Sometimes rotting starts fairly quickly. If the rock was kept in saltwater at the fish store where you bought it, and didn't spend much time out of water, I probably wouldn't bother with the water change just yet.

The best thing to do, and the hardest, is to just let the tank circulate for 4 weeks. Just keep your temperature proper and your tank circulation up. That's it. After 4 weeks you'll have a fairly stable environment for your new pets.

Patience your rock will be fine. You do however need test kits.(salifert) very good. Just start testing and wait till the nitrite is zero, Once again patience
