The most usefull thing in this hobby I have found is the subscribe button at the bottom of threads. Makes it easy to silently tag along to a thread without making everyone else link back to find a post that says tag or just tagging along... :eek1: :D

If you're using Rubbermaid type tubs as a sump/refugium leave the top on and cut a hole in the top. It gives it greater structural integrity, think eurobracing on a plastic tub.

..which reminds me....I took 2x4s and made a rectangle that fits around the center of the tub, then I slide them up into place to help resist the bulging that happens in the middle with larger rubbermaid containters. Once in place the pressure holds them in so all you need is 4 pieces of wood held together somehow (I used corer brackets). It's only been about 6 months like that, but no blowout yet...and if it does..it's in a place that will drain with no issues.

I just made a spray bar using Lockline for my 30gal frag tank. It fits right into the bulkhead is very inexpensive. you can make it as long as you want, direct it where you want, and put nozzles and/or flares as you see fit. got them at
www.savko.com
very good site for bulkheads etc. also- got the link out of DIY forum.
Andy there was very helpful and reef friendly!

Anothe use for salt buckets:

I have a bucket under the sink that I keep a gallon of vinegar in with lid on (keeps vinegar smell in bucket) All my powerheads, brushes, tools, etc. just get tossed in there when dirty. When I need them, I just rinse them off with hot water and their good to go. No scrubbing needed.

You can also go into a camper section of Walmart, etc and buy small ice cube trays that are exactly the same size as the frozen cube you buy. They twist and pop right out.:D

anyone able to find these ?

to keep bags of new arrivals from floating away while they are being acclimated, use double sided poster tape. holds the bag in place with no chance of the currents getting it

to save A LOT of money make your own rock (very easy).
I made 125# for $15
4 parts crushed oyster shell to 1 part white portland cement.
I have pics in my gallery.

Atticus ~ you do not want to use Epsom salt in your tank...do a search (I'm too lazy right now, sorry)... the chemistry wizards will explain why.

~ Sherri

You can use epsom salts for magnesium. Do a search on Randy's articles.

Sorry if this one is already out there, but mouse pads make great vibration and noise absorbers for pumps. I use one on my return pump (an external pump) and my skimmer feed pump (a submersible pump). The thicker the mouse pad the better.

That is exactly where I got the idea and have been using it for nearly a year now with no side effects to my knowledge. Maybe less consitpation and softer fins for my fish... :D

I premeasure the food into pill boxes. The week long kind. Each day, one feeding.

damn! i thought of this all by myself, and i thought i was a genius!!!

dont stick your hands under rock or in crevices--in the wild, i've seen a medium sized crab snatched in an instant by a small octopus--it scared the hell outta me....if you've ever been crawdad hunting, you know to keep your hands in sight--i swear there are three foot long crawdads with monster claws out there...

sorry for the double post...sometimes I want to strangle my computer with the mouse cord

dont buy your first heater for your salt tank at walmart....i did that....that flaky black stuff is a pain to remove as it keeps flakingas you are trying to remove it, ;)

I didnt real the whole thing (yet!) so somone may have said this...

take a pvc pipe cap one end drill small holes in it (maybe 1'' apart) fill it will rubble and place it behind your rocks, intank refugium :)

How do you guys feel about buying you're first heater from Walmart?? Kidding....Great posts, very helpful, off to try and find an old plastic film case.....

Make your own joes Juice, kalkwasser and RO water is all it takes.
Mix as much or as little as you need and store the rest in a plastic bottle or film bottle. Mix several tablespoons of Kalk with ro water to a thickness of a little wetter then paste. Draw it up in a small syringe and spot kill anything you need to get rid of, aptasia or majanos.
Cost pennies compared to joes juice.

Here's an idea I read in a post a while ago for cooling the water in your tank if you don't wanna buy chillers (not sure if it's already posted here or not).

Connect a long hose to the output of a pump inside your tank, run the hose inside a bucket full of ice, and stick the other end of the hose back in the tank. This way the tank water goes through the hose, inside the bucket of ice, returning cool water back into the tank.

You can change the level of cooling by adjusting the length of the hose that's sitting in the ice bucket.

If you have a small fridge or freezer you can run the hose inside the fridge, so you don't have to buy blocks of ice (not sure if it would be cheaper though).
