Social networking vs. forum technology

I know SLASH has a facebook page but I was wondering if there has been a push towards moving most discussions/sales there. Reefcentral forums have the advantage of searching old posts more easily but in general the platform has become antiquated in the face of modern social networking. Photos/movies are harder to post, linking to other sites is impossible (instagram) and private messaging is cumbersome compared to FB messenger.
I've been a member for two years but find myself rarely on the page because its such a pain to get to, especially from a mobile ap-which is notable since most most of us use our phone to access internet sites. Even if we were to stick with a forum based page, ********* has become a more active forum. Just my 2 cents....it may be time for the club to move on...

Starting a fire is not my intent...just trying to suggest the club enter the 21st century. It would certainly help encourage the younger generation to participate.

BTW, sorry for the late reply, this Forum is slow to notify me if there has been a response to my thread. Responses to my FB posts show up on my iphone instantly.

I think you have great topic here that could be further discussed. There are pros and cons for each platform. The FB is very easy for many people to use. However, communicating on ReefCentral gives you larger audience for help and researching. It's probably a lot of work involved in switching to a different platform, but not sure. I think having both would be the best way to go. But, that's more work for the admins to deal with. I would like to hear other opinions so I am following along.

If we go to FB I will need to turn on the notifications, If anyone knows how to limit the notifications to just the SLASH club, let me know.

On the FB app, go to your groups, select your group, then select the info icon. You can change your notification settings in there.

I use Google Chrome and multiple tabs. Takes but a click to get here.

On the other hand. Navigation of this forum and threads arei archaic.

I hate all the crap on Facebook. I have unfollowed basically every local page and most large pages. There is so much misinformation and conjecture on Facebook.

Who's stopping you from posting on FB? Your more than welcome to use the club page's. And yes this has been discussed, that's why the club has the 2 FB pages. Check out all the activity those 2 pages have, if you haven't already :lolspin:

You could simply added a short cut on your phone screen linked here, just like the FB app. This works for both android and Iphone :D

The notification issue you are claiming to have might be the way you have your settings here set vs the way you them on FB. Personally I had to disable all notification from here so my phone isn't going off, and yeah I did the same for FB. Make sure you have the settings here to notify you and your email has to be set to notify you when a new email is received. I have had both Android and Iphones with either Sprint or AT&t and I've never had any issues on receiving notifications from here

I'm not sure if you're saying FB is more active or the other Forum clay-boa is. If your saying FB is, well I don't see that. I'm not a big fan of the other forum so I don't have much knowledge to use as a comparison.

One complaint you left out was the easy of posting pic :wildone:

I don't think anyone here will be complaining about a 10 min delay on responding. Heck the biggest part of this hobby is patience

So true about the FB drama. The ones that I really liked watching were the folks who got butt hurt and started a new page just to keep one person from making fun of them :uhoh2:

I think it's funny when someone gets sound advice and then takes the advice from someone who obviously doesn't know what they are speaking of.

FB is the DEVIL :hammer: The only advantage I can see with FB is every phone nowadays has the app installed

Agreed. Reef Central and the other message boards are more for quality of information, than quantity. Lots and lots of folks use the FB groups that know about SLASH. Many of them are looking for the instant gratification that today's folk want, and they use Facebook for quick sales. Few, IF ANY, ever hang out with the SLASH Club, or join for our altruistic motive to help others without expecting anything in return. Many in our membership spend time on Facebook and other venues, but they come here for a true feeling of belongness that they can't get elsewhere. Never underestimate the desire for folks to want to actually meet others in the same hobby and hang out.

If I wasn't buying your pretty, expensive, beautiful sps corals, I'd probably never meet you, and you've been a member here for over 6 years. Granted, I haven't met you yet and I rarely miss an event, so I think you're missing what we are really all about. Maybe join us for a couple pizza nights in person, see what we are about, then think about what you're suggesting after you see in person.

I am active on FB and participate on most of the national pages. The local FB page that gets the most traffic is unaffiliated with the club.

I didn't leave out the ease of posting pics...please reread my initial. Movies are virtually impossible to post.

The notification delay is a problem if you want to add functionality like online auctions.

One other consideration, FB is open source and posting about other sites/forums is encouraged. I take issue with the reef central policy of not listing other information sites.

Messaging with FB is as rapid as texting.

With regard to bad false information posting, one need look no further than RC posts to see poor advice and arrogant/condescending trolls.

I know change is hard, but you can't deny the technical advantages of modern social networking. If nothing else consider the aesthetic updates. FB updates their site at least quarterly...when was the last time RC got a facelift.

Nook, I appreciate your sentiments and was not suggesting the club change its philosophy, outreach or support. I was more suggesting that the mean by which it communicates could be more efficient and fun.

I have attended a pizza night and the recent swap. I would attend more but Thursday nights are rough for some of us working folk. The swap was excellent, kudos to the SLASH board. I look forward to meeting you and other members in the future, exclusive of what type or expense of coral you're interested in.

Again, I think this question of software platform is mutually exclusive of your points Nook...SLASh is great the way it is, maybe the way it communicates can be better.

Now that you put it that way.
I downloaded Tapatalk so I have no problems getting messages or notifications here. For me Facebook is easier to navigate. But I agree your statement 100%. I do feel like I have friends on here more so than I do on Facebook.

I haven't seen that in our part of reefcentral.com.

What we're basically saying is if you want to post on our Facebook page do it!
