softies killed some of my sps, do LPS fair better with softies?

I have receintly upgraded my tank to a 90 which came with some softies. They consisted of 3 large finger leathers, a large spaghetti finger leather, and tons and tons of Kenya Trees. I was unaware that when I merged my sps frags into the tank, the leathers would have such a decimating effect. I lost my pink birdsnest, Orange Montipora Cap, and my Stylopora.

My Mac's Montipora, Gorgonian, GSP's, Zoa's, mushrooms, and my unknown SPS (I think it's an Acropora of some kind) are doing quite well however.

The funny thing is that the corals that I lost were actually farther from the softies than the others.

So, I am wondering what to add to this tank to get some color. I was wondering if LPS faired better with the softies than my SPS did. I really don't want to add anything that has very long sweepers.

Can you folks suggest some colorful coral that would be compatible with what I have?
My lighting consists of 6x 54W T5.

Thanks,

Many LPS seem to be a bit more tolerant than SPS to that kind of chemical warfare. Heavy skimming, carbon, and water changes will all help to reduce the effect it has on Any coral though.

Trachyphyllia, Scolymia, Cynaria, Lobophyllia, Caulastrea, Bubble Coral, Fungia, and many Favia and Favites species would all be ok choices if placed well.

Hey how much u r skimming and foremost are u using carbon?
If u are u can get away with this combination, but certainly u r goin to have some fatalities.

For both kinds of corals to grow to their best potential, they really need to be on a separate water source. There's just too much potential for mayhem. I fought that battle for years, having a leather frag I hung onto for, yep, years, and I'd have been far better off to have separate tanks.

Yea, I don't run carbon, though I do a good deal of wet skimming. Are the leathers the most destructive, or do I need to worry about the Kenya Trees as well? I am debating getting rid of the 3 huge finger leathers and just keeping a small one (about 2") and fragging it to keep it small. Then fragging off a small portion of the spaghetti leather to keep and selling off the large portion. Three 6" finger leathers and a 6" spaghetti leather is a bit much for my 90 anyhow. Do you think that will help, or do I need to get rid of all leathers and the capnella also?

Thanks,

You NEED to run carbon with those leathers in there. They give off noxious chemicals escpecially when they are stressed. Im moving my leathers into another tank soon.. they are getting to be a liability. As for the kenya trees im not sure but you should def be running carbon. Btw I run carbon 24/7 and everything seems to get along ok even in my 40g with two devils hands one of which takes up 1/6 of the tank.

What did your sps' look like while this was going on. I have some Montis' and Acros' w/ a leather. I've noticed that one of the Montis' is receding and I think the acro is too.

if I pull the Leather will the sps' come back? In my 65 the Leather is only 4" acrossed...I didn't think such a small coral could do that much damage.

Is it possible to have kenya and sps or is that disaster waitng to kill. I have one monti and so far i have had now problems and I had a hammer in tank with kenya w/o problems.

I've seen lots of tanks with softies, zoas and lps living together, but very very few tanks with SPS and leathers.
