i broke my Tunze when using the dremel. The LFS said its because of the heat from the dremel. Be careful

sorry to hear about that, you must have a bigger dremel and battery than I have. If the sand wheel is small and thin it shouldn't genereate too much heat to melt it down.....

Im gonna change the stock return pump for a maxijet 900, for you guys that have the maxi 900, does it fit on the stock return line or is there a mode needded?

I actually like the stock return, it is nice a quiet and throws quit a bit of flow.

Why are you changing the stock return?

There have been some reports that the stock return pump isn't very reliable. I have a few MJ 900 laying around and was thinking about doing the same thing. Not to mention if you are setting up the middle chamber as a fuge the slower flow would be better.

The slower the flow the more contact time with whatever you have in your fuge. And yes 160 gph is a 40% reduction in flow so it is significant. Basically you want as much flow as possible inside the display portion of the tank but you want to try to slow it down in the filtration section.

Is the stock pump not adjustable?
I'd like to hear from those who have actually removed the stock and replaced it with something else, and how well it fits down there and if there are any issues etc...

I'm guessing someone has used the MJ 900 as a replacement in the Solana?

How about a MJ1200?

Thats a power head isn't it, not a pump? Would the power heads work as replacements for the stock return pump?

I was thinking of something like this one...

Or these...

Can the powerheads be return pumps?

Yea I was talking about power heads, here is the one

I don't see any reason why you couldn't as long s you had the correct hosing.

I'm running q MJ 900. The hose from the stock pump is to big. If I remember right the one I used has an OD of ½ with an inside diameter if 3/8.
The MJ 900 uses less watts then the MJ1200 (= less heat, with summer coming). The 1200 gives little gph over the 900 that it is not worth it. Unless you have an extra 1200 sitting around I would go for the 900.
The slower the flow through the back will give the skimmer more time to do it's job.

There are quite a few people that have replaced the stock pump with the MJ 900. I thought there were a few in this thread but I know there are some on another forum in the Solana owners thread.

Why are you changing the stock return?

several reasons...

1. Slow down the flow on the rear.
2. Maxijet 900 uses only 8.5watts so its gonna help on the power bill
3. Since maxijet uses probably alot less wattage than the sotck return pump it should run much cooler than the sotck pump, it gets warm here in the desert...

I don't have issues with 2 or 3 that I know of. So the flow is the only one I can think of that might be an issue, if you can call it that.

Actually slowing the flow in the rear chambers is the best reason for swapping out the stock pump. Yes it will run cooler and use less energy, but the extra contact time for the skimmer and any other filtration is the greatest benefit.
