Sonny's Rimless Shallow Reef.

Hey Sunny,

I really enjoy your tank, it's one of my inspiration for my tank. I have a rimless 36x30x20, and have a couple building threads on other reefing sites. Majority of the fellow reefers say that I should aquascape like your tank, I know it won't be exactly like yours. I will try to re-create your aquarium but a little of my taste too. My question is I know you have a 7 bulb t5 fixture. Do you think with minimal aquascaping I can go with a 6 bulb t5 fixture? Most people say 8 bulb would be ideal but I really like the ATI sunpower. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and thank you. :D

IF you position the corals accordingly you should have no issues with a 6 bulb fixture. You can use the spaces where the T5's are not directly over and places acans, chalices, and encrusting montis. Ati makes great fixtures, good luck!

hi my dimensions are 1500mm x 600mm x 600mm not such what it is in inches.

i could also get for the same price 2x250W MH with 4x80W T5's... but im just looking for great colors in my corals and not really worried with the type of light that is needed

i wont be feeding them directly...but will be dosing amnio acids once a week to keep them happy.

With those dimensions you should be fine with 8 5' bulbs. If you spaced out the corals correctly you could even get away with 6 bulbs.

Will running filter socks for short periods of time, like over night, remove the bacteria I have added with mb7 from the water.

I like to run them when I stir the shallow sand bed or stir my sump to help filter the water.

Thanks

Well,

I guess it would depend on the micron size of the filter socks. If you are using it one night a week you should not have issues with the bacterial population. If you are worried about the bacteria, simply add an extra dose the following day.

Sunny, what would you say your lighting looks closer to? 10k, 12k, 14k or 20k? Im trying to get a idea of what your lighting looks like.. You have some top down pics that look amazing, I like the way your ORA tri valida looks, mine looks kinda washed out under my bulb line up at the moment... keep up the Awesome reefing..

Hello,

The lighting is between 10-14K. You have the look of 10K but without the yellow or Purple pigment dominance, with the Blue pigment "pop" of a bluer bulb. The combo is bluer then XM 10K, and whiter then XM 20k bulbs if that is any help.

To my eye the color looks perfectly balanced, the right proportions of blue and white while hitting the entire spectrum of color.

Sunny nice tank, congrats!

you r running 7 bulbs right now, your light fixture is a DIY? Normally fixtures comes with 6, 8, 10 spots. Did you removed one bulb?

Hello and thank you. :D

The fixture I am using is an Aquactinics Constellation: http://www.aquactinics.com/pages/72-Constellation.html

It is fully enclosed, cooled, along with individual reflectors. I have been using the fixture for over 1 year with great results.

Hey Sonny, my assist with the fixture name came a moment too late  However, I do have a question... Do you think that having one more blue plus in your (4 blue pluses & 3 ab specials) fixture makes a big difference. I find that my system looks a little too white at times and I was considering replacing either my midday or one of the ab specials with another blue plus to take the edge off, while preserving PAR at the same time.

Yeah, my posting kung-fu is strong! I was on that question like flies on turds! :lmao: In all seriousness, I appreciate you and everyone else taking the time to respond to questions here.

If I were to add an 8th bulb to my current setup it would have to be an ATI Blue+. While I do like the color I have now, a little extra blue wouldn't hurt. Who knows, it may even darken up some of your corals. ;)

jbanks, I'm in the same boat as you. At first, I was running this arrangement:

FRONT
ATI Blue+
ATI Aquablue Special
ATI Aquablue Special
ATI Blue+
ATI Blue+
ATI Aquablue Special
ATI Blue+

I thought that was too white, so I recently changed to this:

FRONT
ATI Blue+
ATI Aquablue Special
ATI Blue+
UVL Super Actinic
ATI Blue+
ATI Aquablue Special
ATI Blue+

I still think that's a little too white. I'm thinking of pulling the AB Special from the front and replacing it with another Blue+

Sunny,

I am trying to join the group and can't find anywhere that says "JOIN GROUP". I still haven't figured out the new Reef Central. I am not a huge fan of it so far but it is growing on me.

How do I join?

Thanks!

edit - I found it! OK no I didn't! LOL

I just checked it out, and it appears that you must be a premium member in order to join/create a group. :strooper:

sunny, after reading(hours worth) part of your thread i have been thinking of dosing lugos to my tank, i currently use BRS 2 part daily.
my DT is 84 gallons and i have another 18 gallons in the sump/fuge so around 102 gallons total. How much lugos should i use daily?

Current parms
ph 8.0
alk 7
calc 430
mag 1270
nitrates 0
using salifert test kits.

salinity 1.025

thx again
