Picked up a nice zoo yesterday. I don't know what it is yet, maybe blue/purple hornet??

I just got back into zoo's so I will leave the ID to you experts:

hey sunny what is the name of those yellow one who sell them?

I plan on using all Aquascience bulbs the next time around. I may throw in a Fiji Purple but I am still not decided on what combo of Aquascience I will be using.

In the test above the Aquascience blew ATI away. The growth comparison photos were shocking. :eek1: [/B]

very interesting - but notice the bulb combo is 7 : 3 white with both sets of bulbs. most of us run about 50/50 white to blue. makes me wonder if we are running too many blue tubes?
and the discussion comments that followed also got me thinking about running more dif bulbs to hit even more spectrum
currently i have 3 blue +, 1 22K AS, 1 actinic, 2 aquablue, 1 ULV actinic white, (thats 5 - 3 blue to white) I may have to rethink that??
I have a aquasun laying around - i may just swap it out with one of the blue + this weekend
and yeah it seems like a lot of people like their fiji purp - i don't have one but i wonder if throwing one of those in to replace another blue + would be a good idea?

Sunny your tank is sooo nice I took your advice and made a diy gravel vac.

Looks like you're are handy DIY'er!

I vacuumed up my sand bed again yesterday and am always amazed at how much detritus comes out of it.

How did it work out for you?

They yellow ones are called "King Midas". I purchased mine locally and the store ships corals, but I don't know about shipping to PR: http://www.tropicoriuminc.com/product.php?productid=61

You are correct, most Euro tanks run a ratio of 7:3 white on their systems. I have seen some that run ONLY Aquablue Specials without any other bulbs. Mixing up the available spectrum is always good as it may bring out certain colors that would not have come up with the previous lighting. I will be replacing my light bulb soon and will have one Fiji Purple in the mix. I am still looking at options for the other bulbs although I am very happy with the ATI bulbs I am using now. Maybe I will just use the ATI bulb and throw in one Fiji Purple, maybe not.

Decisions, decisions.....:reading:

Sunny, how is the vodka dosing going? I've been fighting the brown short hairy algae on my LR and glass (not the typical brown flat algae) for months now. I tried vodka dosing for a bit over a month with the hope it would help with the issue.

My water parms are:
Ammonia:0
pH: 8.0-8.1 (I drip kalk but it doesn't seem to get any higher)
Alk: 9.8 dkh
phosphate: undetectable (API, SeaChem)
Nitrate: undetectable (API, salifert)
temp: 77-80
Ca:390-420

75g display w/ 55g sump, total volume ~110g
I do bi-weekly 20% water changes (RODI, ReefCrystals)

Any suggestions on what I can try next to resolve this issue (or what you think I might be doing wrong)?

I was astonished at how much detritus came out of it. I clogged 3 filter socks!, It was really exciting to do also!. I am for sure going to vacuum it from now on. It churns the top layer and mixes it up great, this works out good for me because the top layer of the crushed coral always turns purple w/ coralline algae. Now it looks bright white and new again, I'm sure the bounce back from the lighting is much greater now. Thanks for the tip!.

Careful with what corals you put the aquasun over - while I like it much better than a pro color, it completely changed the pigmentation of one of my favorite corals, the tyree undata in my avatar. It used to look like my avatar, until I put a uv aquasun directly above it. After about a month, the coral is completely pale pink, almost fleshtone, with white polyps, with no green whatsoever, and not nearly as attractive. I can only think its the change in spectrum, so I went back to an ATI AB special above it, and we'll see what happens.

Sonny, you definitely need to try the Fiji purple! That bulb rocks in a mix of aquablues and blue plus. I'm currently running my dawn/dusk with the three bulb switch on the constellation..1 blue plus, Fiji, 1 AS 22K. The color is ridiculous. I will experiment a lot with other bulbs for sure, but will always have a Fiji in the mix. Shouldn't have any problems with algae either.

I took some pictures an hour ago that are the most accurate I've been able to get of the dawn/dusk lighting. I'll post some tonight.

Nice! I would love to see the pics when you post them as I would like to run a similar combo the next time around.

sunny, how heavy is that light fixture? i'm reading that the ati 8x54 are really heavy. like in the 30 lbs or above area. this may be an issue for me because i have high vaulted ceilings and trying to figure out a way to "float" the fixture above the tank.

thanks.

I am not sure how much my fixture weighs but I would put it at around 20lbs.
