Sonny

Looking great man! My mini-Sunny tank is looking great to. Check it out!

Where did you get your lords from?

-Dave

Most from Tropicorium and a good friend. :)

In my system a little vodka went a long way. My system was pretty clean to start with so I didn't have to dose as much. I believe I got almost to 4ml before reaching the desired nutrient levels and scaling back to half the dose at 1.8ml.

As a point of reference for those who are new to, or considering vodka dosing, every tank is different. I have a about 160 -170G total system volume. I've been dosing vodka (80 proof) since August. I worked up to 18ml a day. . .yes 18 not 1.8 like Sonny. I cut back to 10ml last week when I started getting red fluffy cyano. I also started dosing AAs, Lugols, and Bacteria.

My tank has never looked better, thanks to Sonny!!!

Just take it slowly and adjust as required.

:D

Glad to see that it is working for you.
Just keep an eye on the red fluffy algae. It is get out of hand cut back on Vodka and AA while increasing bacteria.

ECFENCING:I will try and get a few FTS this weekend for you.

hey sonny - been enjoying the tread a lot!

you've clearly been really happy with the performance of your constellation fixture! i'm trying to decide between it and the ATI Powermodules.

do you (or any others here) have any sense of how the constellation compares to the ATI in terms of fan noise level?

my setup will have 400W halides and so I know that the fans will be running a lot and the tank is in a very quiet living room (even 6305 tunze's were too loud -- all pumps will now be in the next room). :-)

Sonny, Do you find dosing bactieria very important with vodka. What does it do and how does it actually help? Im only on day 3 of that vodka link you send me but dosing small amounts of zeobak every 3 days.

Hello and thanks for following along! :D

The last time I seen an Ati power module in person I couldn't really tell how loud it was due to background noise and such of other aquariums there.

Now, with the Constellation I have to REALLY listen closely in order to hear it. Compared to a single 4" fan that I ran on my previous 400W halides, the Constellation is much quieter.

I suggest you get in contact with one of the local SF reefers. I know of at least three guys in your area who have them up and running.

Judging by your impressive resume and line of work I am sure you can find a way to dampen the sound of the fixture without degrading the quality and output of the bulbs. ;)

I have noticed increased skimmate production and positive responses from my corals. Plus, I no longer have a problem with red cotton algae as I had when I was only dosing vodka.

Judging by my corals growth and extension of feeding tentacles I believe the bacteria is doing a great job. I am getting less and less detritus setting in the tank and sump now.

I really see no cons in dosing bacteria. It is cheap, feeds corals, and helps maintain system stability.

So.....

I am getting close to setting up the frag tank but am still in need of a frag rack. I have been looking around and am having a hard time finding an alternative to eggcrate.

From what I have seen and in my personal experience eggcrate always creates a diatom bloom in my systems. Now, I am not sure what they are leaching but it is never good.

Recently I made a small frag rack for my tank out of eggcrate and within a few days my sand went from white to brown. :mad2: After a week the brown diatoms subsided and the sand is white again.

Anyone have any frag holding alternatives or maybe methods of soaking the eggcrate?

I plan on getting the frag tank up very soon but need to find a way to hold up the frags. :)

What if you make something like this out of epoxy or drill some holes in live rock?

It may take more time and money but a piece of acrylic drilled for your plugs would work the same imo. They sell them but they could easily be diy'd. Just stand it up on PVC risers.

Also was wondering if I could get your opinion on a light order
Front
Blue+
aquaspecial
Fiji purple
Aquaspecial
Pro color
Aquaspecial
Blue+

I'm using a 48" constellation. My tank is 18" front to back and 20" top to bottom. My lights are ~6" above the water.

Yeah, I was JUST looking at those at the filterguys.com . :D

I seen some Acrylic eggcrate but they run $225 for a box of 10 sheets. I don't need 10 sheets and don't want to pay $225 for some plastic.

Maybe I can get together a local group buy.....

Everything looks good with your lighting setup although it would look better if you replaced the Pro Color with a Blue+. I ran the Pro Color and did not like it, and in your case you already have a Fiji purple so the Pro color is not needed.

Why is your fixture so high up off the water? For reference I run my 3-4" off the rim of the tank.

I saw one person bought a clear acrylic sheet and drilled holes in it for the frag plugs. I've bought 1/4" thick acrylic sheets at Lowe's. Would that work for you?

Those were the racks I was thinking of. They would be pretty simple to construct. A sheet of acrylic with holes drilled (1/4" to 1/2" depending on the plugs you use) and then attach legs of some sort to raise it up. Just like egg crate but you drill your own holes.

As for my lights the fixture sits about 4" above the tank and the water level is about 2" down from there. I tried lowering them but my corals didn't care for it. So I raised it back up. Everybody seems happy now. As everything gets more settled, I will try lowering them again.

For the frag tank, you might contact eshopps.. I can't find details on them, but from the pics Eric posted, their racks look really nice: http://glassbox-design.com/2009/new-eshopps-acrylic-frag-rack/

Actually, just found a place selling them: http://www.oceanproaquatics.com/shop/plug-frag-rack-station-corner-ships-free-p-19742.html

That just might work! Although, I am not sure how many I will need. I guess i will have to have the frag tank up before deciding on a rack.

I can't wait to visit when I go to Michigan next weekend... I haven't been there in so long. Looks like the quality of stuff has gone up there, at least from what I remember. :)

Tropicorium has always been good but recently they have been getting in literally thousands of acans, many maxima clams,Crazy chalices, and now ORA corals.

Yeah, I guess just the stuff I've seen on their site is crazy. They never even sold anything online before.

Regardless, I'm looking forward to friends, watching the Tigers and going to Tropicorium!

Sorry for hijacking, back on topic.
