Sps feeding new pappone

I'm not sure the alcohol works as a preservative. I would think it actually starts to break down the proteins, but I'm no chemist. Maybe RHF could answer that in the chemistry forum. But if anyone has made infused vodkas by adding fruit or something else to vodka for flavoring, the way that works is the alcohol breaks down the sugars in the fruit and the flavor enters the solution.

I've been adding citric acid/ascorbic acid or vitamin C to the pappone for that purpose. It's used as a preservative in the food industry. Just normal powdered form added to the mix. It acts as an antioxidant. It is also a carbon source. People have dosed these directly to their tanks as a carbon source.

I think Randy or one of the other strong chemistry people on the Chemistry forum could tell us what the alcohol is doing in your pappone mix.

Post some pics! Haven't seen any in a while :)

Hi bill

The way it was explained to me and I could have miss understood is, the sugar is to preserve the mix and the vodkas is to decrease the nutrients in the tank as a carbon source so nutrients don't spike.

I just posted a few pictures will send you the link.

Who or where did you get the vodka addition to the pappone recipe from? Sugar was already part of the recipe to my knowledge.

Maybe you missed it but it's in My very first post to this thread and if you take a look at the you tube video it explains what they use In France.
Hope this helps

Ah ok. I watched it a few times but didn't try reading or translating the scrolling text. The video is still up. Just watched it again. Michael you said someone explained it to you. Who was it that explained the reason for the vodka? It's only 2mls so not much anyway.

someone on reef central translated it for me and broke it down. then i did alot of research online. I would have to check the hundreds of post to see exact who, try researching it on the chemistry forum they maybe able to help further.
hope this helps,

Bill I was unable to find it as I really didn't relize how many post I have lol but I will keep checking. By the way I am picking up a few more piece from Anthony and I will post some pictures.

Just checked out your link to pix of your corals.:bounce1:

Let me say; they are beautiful pieces! I wish you all the very best with your reef, and hope you continue to post pix!

I wish I could put as much dedication in to my tank. Just not possible these days..:o

Anthony is supposed to have some for me this Sunday. 2 that didn't make it and 2 to replace duplicates from the last order. That's supposed to happen Sunday.

It's working better then expected and wish that everyone would use it. But please only use 5ml per 100 gallons of water every 10 to 15 days.

Is this just to get started? Do you feed it more often after a while?

This is a great question; I did feed more at one point and found that I was pouring in to many nutrients that the system couldn’t export fast enough. So i cut back on the MLS and the frequency as well. I have found that 5 mls of this pappone id very high powered and not like any kind of commercial food available.
Remember most if not all companies make foods for sale for profit. In this case we are using all the freshest ingredients possible at full strength. I suggest 5mls per 4100 gallons of water with medium sized sps. As your sps and lps grow then I would increase only 1mls to 2 mls for extended periods of time and see how the system handles the extra nutrients.
In my opinion less is more with this stuff and it really works well. In addition target feeding is not a must but you will see an almost immediate response from your sps as they will close up after catching the food particles.
The only drawback that I have found is that storage is a problem. I usually keep the fresh batch made up and kept in the refrigerator inside a sauce jar like the picture above and rest I freeze .
Well what I found was after defrosting the frozen batch and letting it thaw out/defrost it looked great. But after allowing it to defrost and drawing it into the syringe at the 5ml mark I still did not see any problems until, Injected it into the tank.
What happened once it I hit the water it was not like the liquid that I was used to seeing, There were larger particle’s that looked like little tiny tiny frozen cubes. But they were not frozen cubes, it was the shrimp, clams, mussel had metabolized into thicker particle mass. None the less all the SPS seemed to feed anyway as they normally do with what was not bigger particles and my LPS the couple I have were really feasting not to mention the fish had a field day snatching up every tiny particle they could.
I think for my set up it doesn’t matter if I used the freshly made up pappone or the stuff that is frozen. Even though the both come from the same batch they enter the tank differently. I am so happy to have taken this pappone food to the next level and hope everyone that is serious about reef keeping at least take the 30 day liquid genesis trial.

My next write up will be how to treat AEFW in tank treatment very soon under my thread >>>> http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2440445
