After spending countless days and hours on reef central and seeing all those beautiful sps tanks I'm looking to go SPS. My Tank now is 75g Ligthing is 330w \ VHO and 130w\ PC lookin to go to175 MH(2) ank keep th VHOs .My skimmer is a Red Sea burlin to be switched to a tunzi. Add a refugium to the sump 29g. Tank has been running for 20 months. Ammo=0, Nitrite=0,Nitrate between 5 & 10,PH =8.1-8.3, Phosphates=0, Salt=1.025, Cal=420 , Alk 3.0.My tank has Two clams, A few button colonies , some green star polyps and it is bombbarded with mushrooms everywhere some red but mostly green stripe. What is the best way to convert over to SPS . Will the mushrooms and button polyps get fried from MH or would I have to put them into a different tank and start over. Sorry I dont have pictures .Im having a problem trying to upload them .Even after reading books, threads, im still having problems. When I get it I will post them.Sorry for a long thread , it's my first.

[welcome]

I can try to move this thread into the NTTH or SPS forum, if you want. Those forums have more members who can help you with this process.

jzdad, congratulations on your first post, it's a good one.
I can tell you that if your mushrooms will be touching your SPS, they don't play nice! Mushrooms are like anemones, they irritate SPS causing the tissue in that area to die off. If your rocks are covered with them, maybe you can sell them and get new rock. You might even be able to trade them in at your LFS to offset the cost of your new equipment.

Sorry about that bertoni..........I'm new at this ....I'll get the hang of this. It took me almost 45 min. to learn how to post a thread and I put it in the wrong one. Thanks!

Thanks,Konadog that good to know I"ll be stopping at the local LFS to talk about a trade .Now as far as the equipment Is that going to be OK?( The new lighting and skimmer.)

Lighting sounds fine as long as your tank isn't deeper than 24 inches. I don't know about the skimmer, I have never used that brand.

Konadog....My tank is actually 21" high as for the skimmer you guys are the experts so my ears are always open for suggestions, Thanks and I finally learned how to upload pictures I"ll get them up soon.

rbaker...Thanks, now I can get the right responses the right input and be on my way to beautiful SPS tank

Well, I know Tunze makes great products, so I'm sure the skimmer will work just fine. I know that Euro-reef skimmers are good, you can even buy blem skimmers from them at a reduced price. ASM makes a good skimmer at a reasonable price too. There are also copycats of these skimmers that work great. I had a SouthBay skimmer (Euro-reef knock off) on my 100 gallon tank for years. Top of the line skimmers include Deltec, H & S, Bubble King, but they are pricy!

I would look for a needle wheel type skimmer, price is reasonable and they work well.

Sounds like a fine setup to me. I don't know much about high-end skimmers, so I can't add more than has already been said.

If you don't have one yet, I'd recommend that you consider getting a quarantine tank. Some of the SPS corals are pricey, and losing them to a hitchhiker, etc, would be depressing.

Bertoni, Believe it or not I actually quarantee my fish so to do it for my sps would not be a problem. The quarantee tank, It's for the purchase of the new live rock? Correct? When I do fish I usually do this for 14 to 21 days and he /she has to have an healthy apetiete before it goes in the show tank. In all my years in salt water fish I dont believe in medication in the display piece. That is when major problems happends, Do you think that 14-21 is good for the rock?

It might be enough. Hard to say. Ich can live for 6-8 weeks in some cases. I just enjoy my corals and fish in a quarantine tank for a couple of months. Then again, I put some throwawy rock and macroalgae, so they're not so bleak.

Wow I thought I was doing something for 3 weeks when others dont do it. And here you do it for months. It is always good to know things that others do that could help to determind the outcome of your own tank before it is actually complete. Thanks again.......bertoni
