SPS Shallow Reef Tank Build Thread

ive used the probidio.

its alright. i liked the reef boost worked well for me but drops the water quality pretty quickly. which i didnt mind since i have a sponge/duster/clam softie tank but in a sps tank i dont think id use it.

their bio optim and bacteria didnt do anything noticable. nitrates stayed the same as always.

ive used polyp lab products and had the same results as with the probidio.

ive always has good results with ecosystems reef solution and a kalk drip for top off.

im guessing your using are ro/di water for everything, didnt see you mention a po4 removing media? po4 has always caused problems for me when ive done SPS.

Yes, i use RODI for everything in the tank.. Ive never used tap or anything else..

Im thinking about giving it a shot..see what happens..

UPDATE:

I decided to exchange the 2 bigger regal tangs we had for these guys :D

One thing ive noticed is that one of the Aqua Medic 250w ballasts makes a buzzing sound..

Any idea what it could be??

look'n good man. The 3 smaller tangs look great compared to the 2 larger ones, good move.Your LFS allows exchanges on fish?! Thats sweet!!

Hello,

hm I guess that you will not be happy a long time with the 3 docs in such a small tank....

Even for one of them it is too small to soon.

regards

Markus

We will be happy a long time!..Years maybe..

These tangs are maybe 1 1/2 in. long.. The tanks BIG enough to house them quite comfortably.

The tang police can come any time..they have guns..we have guns..lets see what happens..LOL

UPDATE:

Ok, Mexican Turbo snails are the most useless snails ever! They crap like grown adults..they only eat the nori in the clip. I HATE HATE HATE film algae and they dont even touch it.. WHAT DO IT DO?!!.. My sand bed used to be crisp white, now its full of turbo crap.. there is crap everywhere!!!

Any suggestions?.. Thanks! :(

Your tank is new. It is going through a normal cycle of diatoms, which will pass.

Snails that help: Nassarius, Ceriths, Astrea

A cucumber would be nice as well for the sand, or a small Fighting Conch.

i did the same things and added tons of mexican snails that poops all over the place. the snails above are the best combination around. fighting conch are expensive but really do the job and out grows other snails.

I love the concept and visual of the tank - looks great! I have to admit though, I'm a little perplexed by the conspicuous absence of the usually belligerent "tang police".

Healthy mind in healthy body...hehe..

Well, they are tiny, and when the time comes we will give them a big, nice tank to swim in.. I rather have them here where they are fed every 2-3 hours, with lots of nori and vitamins.. than a stinky fish store with bigger fish that pick at their fins...

Im gonna get rid of the turbos and their excessive poop and get the snails Marc posted..lets see how that goes..

i use nassarius and fighting conch in my DSB tank and they kick *ss. the astrea are nice for the glass (remember to turn them over if they fall over).

i would avoid a cucumber until later in the game. i had one keel over in a tank once and had to battle cyano for a while after...

Thanks for you input!

Yeah, im not a big fan of cukes.. I love my sand sifting star..thinking about getting another one..

Im gonna go with astreas.. how many?..50??

I went with 200 in a 180 a few years back. With the unavoidable die off and predation, 2 years later I still have over 100.

I would check out some of the sites like www dot keyscritters dot com or others. I have always had success with them.

Good luck

Also, check out www dot reeftopia dot com I have ordered from them and never had a single doa. The small astreas are 100 for $32.00 and they are great.

clown reef, i like your tank, good idea with the shallow design. how big/small are those regal tangs? your tanks a 58g right? do you think they will outgrow anytime soon or do they seem comfortable?
