SPS Shallow Reef Tank Build Thread

Well, i cant put a lid on it... if fish wanna keep jumping thats fine..ill just keep buying more..LOL..jk..

Honestly, i dont mind just keeping the 5 fish i have left.. id like to get some anthias but still deciding..

Even those hippos will jump. A clear acrylic frame with fishing line woven would create an invisible grid to keep your livestock in the tank.

Or an invisible force field, of course. ;)

Or a gigantic Tennis raquat raquet .. uhm .. thingy.

Actually marc now that I think about it .. BAM PATENTED ITS MINE!

60 test pound flouro carbon strung back and forth ..

Oh man im going to make millions thanks .

Well, after seeing a suicide and my linkia fall apart.. I decided to check my parameters..

Salinity- 1.025
Ammonia-0 (Salifert)
Nitrate-0 (Salifert)
Nitrite-0 (API)

And i accidentally picked up a freshwater PH test kit..gotta go back and exchange it...bleh..

PH- is 8.2-8.3.. (API).
I
m still blaming the salinity change in the death of my linkia..

Is there anything else im missing (other than the items listed before).. to keep SPS successfully? I dont even know why im asking or doubting myself..LOL..Ive kept them before..

But still, i need some reassurance.. :(

Start with the easy stuff, a digi or two and go from there. There are lots of bullet-proof SPS like the slimer and formosas.

Good luck I'm sure it will be great.

P.S. on the jumper, I can relate. I lost a mystery wrasse I've had for two years along with about six fairy wrasses this year. Now I just keep a bunch of tangs.

REEF:

Thanks man!..Im stoking on zoas right now.. thinking about clams first..we'll see..

A Mystery wrasse?!..ouch! Those can be pricey!!

Clams are a good addition to the tank... I've had a few problems with mine, but one of them has hung in there and is still kicking...

Speaking of clams..where is a good place to buy them? Id like some gigas.. It seems like they only offer crocea and maximas most of the time. What are good sites?

Clams Direct has great looking clams at great prices... I pay the same amount from local shops here for not as "nice" looking clams... Here's a link...

those test kits are definitely a must for a great SPS tank... I didn't test often for years, but lately I've been watching things closely and testing things like mag, which I never tested before... My corals are growing faster now than they ever have... I'm talking like one years growth (back then) in a month now... Its crazy... You live and learn... Hehee

okay, im planning almost the exact same build as this except for i plan on using an overated external needlwheel skimmer, calcium reactor and t-5 suppliments. I was wondering how the closed look system worked for you, im trying to account for circulation problems as the tank matures and would prefer not to have power heads if possible. Any sugestions? also i know its taboo to list costs on RC, but im in college and trying to figure out an actual tank cost.

Fish,

Well.. It was an expensive system..along with the Aqua Medic lights..bulbs, Tunze powerheads, controllers.. plumbing parts..blah blah..blah..it adds up...FA$$$t!!

Well, bad bad news...all 3 tangs have ick. It started with one, which 2 pick on...i guessed they stressed him..and now they all have it. I plan to do nothing about it.. I dont have a QT tank, i dont have the time to set it up.. im sorry..

I forgot how stressful fish are sometimes.. :(

regarding your ick - buy some garlic elixer (spelling may be wrong). i have a buddy who has had ick problems w/tangs, started the garlic elixer and they all pulled through fine. once you get rid of the ick, don't stop the garlic - keep it as part of their regular diet (mixed in) and you will have very healthy fish.

selcon has worked wonders for me when stuff like that has happened... soak for a while before feeding. sometimes blue tangs just need to get some "meat" on their bones -- try cyclopees -- it may help them put on more weight and boost their immune system. good luck -- i totally understand how stressful it is! sometimes i just like corals better for that reason (even if they bleach they can come back...).
