SPS Shallow Reef Tank Build Thread

sorry to hear about the ich. i had bad case ich outbreak, the best things to do is feed them a lot. nori everyday soaked for 30 mins with garlic extreme and selcon. i feed my fishes at least 3 times daily. i have PBT and QT for 6 weeks then placed it main display, still have ich after few weeks but keep feeding them all the time and now not even a spot. this was 5 months ago. trying to catch them and place in QT will stress them out even more.

UPDATE:

Well, i isolated the tangs where the UV sterilizer is.. fed them constantly..and they pulled through!.. Right now they are back in the display and getting fat.. All the ick fell off and everybody is doing great.

Parameters are all in check.

Just waiting until i can buy my Ca. reactor in a couple weeks.. :(

Keep in mind that ick comes and goes in cycles and can appear to be completely absent on the fish until the parasites re-establish themselves often more than a week later.

Amazing setup! Beautiful! Very open setup for the fish

The glass looks rather green when empty and I'm seeing that from many that ordered from glasscages. Are you having any regrets wishing you had starphire? Or does the lighting help disappear the green tint?

Keep up the good work

DRAMA,

I dont really see a green tint on my tank but rather a blue-ish tint. The 12K's make it look really nice..love the blue.

I was going to go with starphire...but when i run lights with a blue hue like the 12Ks..i see no difference really. Clarity is perfect i think :)

Sorry i don't have any corals yet guys..im battling ick again..it went and came back. Two of the bigger tanks beat up the smaller one, stressing it and causing it to get it..

Well, he spread the ick around. Im going to set up a hospital tank. Treat with hypo and copper and probably give away the smaller hippo away.

Best,

That's cool I'm planning and still changing ideas on a shallow tank. Oh yeah and how are those tangs actually doing?:D I always see the so-called tang police raiding reefers that keep them in tanks below 100G or 48" in length (not sure if they actually come to your house :D). Is it actually possible to keep tangs long term in a tank size such as yours?

Read the last couple pages, that should answer your questions about keeping tangs in a tank that size.

haha thanks...

Just being lazy, that's all :D

Anyways clownreef plans on putting them into a larger tank once they outgrow it. But isn't one reason why they got ick is because of the tank size or am I wrong?

3 tangs in a tank that size are probaly always going to be some kind of problem IMO. Even if they are small. In this case they are fitting and causing them to stress and get ich.

The tangs are less that 2 inches.. So at this point the tank size is obsolete. Reason why they got ick is because 2 of them bullied the smaller one.. they bit part of the tail.. fins.. causing him to stress..

Im going to put them in a hospital tank. Let the tank run with no fish for a few weeks.. get them fat and ick free and probably give one of the tangs away or sell it or something..

As they grow i will find them new and bigger homes..

Try 6 weeks fallow to rid your reef of any Ich trophants. You can add inverts in the meantime.

That is a little contridicting. They are fighting because they are kept in an improper setup for keeping 3 together IMO.

Good idea on the qt. as was said you must treat all fish and keep display fish free for 6 weeks.

UPDATE:

Well, we spent the weekend with our BFFs the MakoJ's and after much chit chatting with Brian, i decided that a twin dosing pump and B-Ionic would be a good option for my tank. Its a small system so a Ca. Reactor isnt really needed. Im also working on an automatic top off system :D.. Stay tuned!

Also, i decided its not a proper setup for tangs...so back to the board for a new fish list.. I will be keeping my B&W ocellaris until i can find a NICE pair of percs..

I will also be re-doing a part of my plumbing..

Which makes me wonder...what is the best way to cut 2 in. PVC once its installed?..I need to add a Y .. will a saw work since im not planning on spending a gazillion bucks on a BIG PVC cutter..

I know someone selling that twin dosing system if you like. PM psteeleb here on RC to see if it is still available.

A hacksaw will do it.

Thanks Marc, ill shoot him a PM.. and a hacksaw did work..like a hot knife through butter :D

UPDATE:

Well, i changed part of my plumbing while the fish are in the hospital tank...and i came across another liiiiittle problem. The teeth in the overflow box made by glasscages arent wide enough..

How can i make the cuts bigger to increase the water flow from the tank into the box??

Marc? :P

Thanks!

Hey clownreef,

I had to do the same thing on my glasscages overflow. The teeth were not letting enough water in. Anyway, all I did was to use a dremel with a grinding bit and widen every other slit.

RUTZ,

YES!! Exactly, it wont let enough water in.. Do you have a picture of your overflow box??

I guess i will be going to Lowes later.. :) Wish me luck!
