A better thing is to show you what dinoflagellates look like. Here's a picture I found on Google:

It looks a little like cyano bacteria, but people usually refer to it as snot-like. It gets all of the rock, the substrate, equipment and more. I would have thought that article you were referencing would have pictures.

The white stuff you see almost reminds me of the webs that vermetid snails put out. Or some other filter feeder... tough to say based on two pictures. Are you running your lights all day yet? If so, can you get us a few more pictures near the end of the photo period?

I have a couple vermetids in my tank and they leave their "fishing lines" out from time to time. They look alot like those Clownreef.

Marc,

Here are a few pictures. There is no photo period.. No lights are on.

This is in the sump. This jelly-like crap floats at the top.

The only time i seen something like that was when a feather got hit by copper. it discharged something like that.

Perhaps you are right then, and the only reason they are so white/clear is because you aren't running your lights. If so, lights on for a day or two would turn them brown, as anticipated.

The snot on the surface of the sump can be extracted a couple of ways:
Take a large soup ladel, and lower it into the water slightly so the slime pours into the spoon. Dump out in a bowl, repeat 50 times. ;)
Take some white printer paper, and lay it on the surface one sheet at a time, peeling it off with the goo. Repeat until it is gone.

Siphon out what you can. The more proactive you are, the better. It almost looks like a chemical reaction, especially considering that you are dosing a two part. If you pour it in, it can crystallize in one area, and build on that with each subsequent dose. It should be added very slowly in an area of high flow, over 15 to 30 seconds per dose.

Just guesses since I don't really know what you are dealing with quite yet.

Thanks Marc..

Yeah, i have no clue what it is. I broke down the tank, scrubbed everything..started from scratch..and VOILA! its back..LOL.. Its a pain in the ***..

You're not dosing vodka, vinegar, or sugar of any sort are you (not even vinegar in kalk)? I've seen bacterial mats that looked like that from overdosing a carbon source.

Wait a tick..

The carbon from bulkreefsupply sucks ***..

and now that i back track.. this started when i started using it..

Could...it be??

Oh..no..im not dosing anything.

Well...i guess this really does it. I had high hopes for this system. I (along with other people) Invested a lot of time building it. I also spent a lot of money on equipment.. Its reaaally sad seeing it come to an end but this is the second time i deal with this **** and ive had it.

It is a VERY nice set up. The equipment is top of the line but for some reason its not meant to be. Thank you all for your input, opinions and suggestions through out this whole thing. I was fun..until this goo started growing.

So down it goes...hopefully i set it back up sometime soon.

Thanks everybody.

Best,

Diego

I just seen your pics of the jelly-like crap in your sump, and I've been having that same problem in the sump of one of my prop systems, Do you see any type of life in your sump? I've noticed a couple Asterina star floating around every now and then in the jelly-like crap.......

Tomorrow once my lights come back on in that system, I'll take a look and see if I can see anything out of wack in there...... I know I have some Cyano, and some other strange algae type things in there, but I just chalked it up to neglect on my part!!

Now you have me thinking!!!

Wind mentioned copper, did you have any problems with equipment at any time? I had a heater go bad and the case leaked/broke..... Could this be a copper problem?

You know, now I'm really thinking.... I have a flatworm problem (red Planera), just never got around to treating it.... and I'm also running some carbon, (not very quality stuff I may add), because I read somewhere Zoas and Xenia don't get along, (don't ask!),, which brings up my other problem, I cannot seem to keep Xenia alive....

Do you have Xenia in there?... It kinda looks like it in the picture..... and if so, how is it doing??

Those were some duncans i had.. Right now there is nothing but rock. Right now, the water is all cloudy i have no idea why...this whole thing has me extremely frustrated.. This goo is all over the equipment, the rock, the water.. Its EVERYWHERE.. I wish i knew what it was..

I really do.
