Starting a new tank thread....

Its a MSX250, extended cup, modded sicces, etc........ I modded them like crazy (3 layers 7210 mesh, machined pump, new shafts, shorter front bushing, P-S.com reducer, etc) before you were able to get all these new PW's for them.

If I were going to keep running it I might consider changing to the WM red's, but I get GREAT numbers and nasty skimmate with my meshwheels as well.... :hammer:

It will be for sale once I'm done moving stuff over. Keep an eye open for a large FS thread around the end of February when I hope to have everything transferred over.

Here it is with the standard cup:

The skimmer is a beast, its just way too much for the new setup, and wouldve taken too much room in the sump.

Did you custom make the extended cup or purchase it? I ask because I have a skimmer that is way overpowered (though easily throttled back) for the size and height of the collection cup and riser, and was going to see about getting a precision marine Bullet XL3 collector cup, as it has a much longer reaction neck and could produce better skimmate that way I'm sure. Was just about to find the OD" measurements of both.

your new tank starts looking really nice.
I am new to the hobby and setting up a 90gal tank as well. I am just wondering how you like the Vertex alpha 170 skimmer and Tunze return pump. What's is the noise level to compare to others? I am trying to bring it down as much as possible for my new setup.

Thanks

The extended cup was purchased through marine solutions.....

The biggest reason for the downsize in tank is because my monthly expenses were too much with the 180. A side mission is also to "upgrade" where possible. I went with the Alpha 170 and Tunze for their low wattage and "higher end" qualities. That being said, I am extremely suprised how nice they both are. Ive used Tunze for awhile now and have never had a complaint. If I do, I go tell Roger whats happeneing and it gets resolved. The wattage is very low, and they definitely call it a silence pump for a reason.

The same goes for the Alpha 170, the thing is just insanely well built and it is whisper quiet. Im getting a cover made for the overflow in the tank because thats the noisiest thing by a long shot.

90 gallons sure seems like a popular size. It is what I ended up with...big enough yet still manageable, and not too small for stability. You'll like it!

I don't see a lot of people out there using Tunze stuff, but I'm with you, their equipment is top notch.

What kind of lighting do you have on that 6 footer now? I saw a 72" LED setup for sale. Wasn't cheap though, but how cool!

Hey BATC, quick question. How big is that fuge T-5 light? Also, is there a large selection of bulbs for it? Planning on getting one myself :D

Unfortunately theres not too big a selection of lights for it. Only reason I got it is because it's 18" wide which is perfect for my 40B sump. The only bulbs Ive found for it are 460nm actinic and 10K, both made by CurrentUSA. They also have a NEP 6x18w T5 which wouldve been sweet, but thats too much to spend on a fuge light....

The upside is that although its only got one 10K at the moment, Im already noticing the chaeto growing faster than the one with the cheap spiral CFL bulb....

Awesome, how much did is cost and where did you buy it?

I think it was like $50. I got it from Dr. F&S.... Its just a basic CurrentUSA Nova SLR T5 light.... I also did it so I can keep frags in the fuge. Theyre only 1.5 - 2 inches under the surface so it should be enough light once I get the other 10K light in there.

Thanks for the info, the order has been placed.

Its Key Largo Marcorock.... Its some really nice rock. I just wanted a clean slate to start from..... After I get most of the corals out of the 180, I have to sell that rock to reimburse myself for buying new rock....

little confusing.... selling rock to buy new rock??

if you have extra that Marcorock laying around I'll buy some.

Yep. I have some aiptasia and poccillipora on my current live rock that I wanted to make sure I didnt have in the new tank, so I started with new dry rock again in the new tank.....

Every tank I have started has been with dry marco rock, then I add a scoop of livesand into my fuge from an established tank and then all the critters start to populate the new rock.
