starting from scratch...cycling help

Gonna start cycling my reincarnated rock. Gonna add some cycled LR to add a little nitrobacter innoculum to my soup.

Doing it in a Brute in the basement.

Questions:

Lights, No lights?
Skimmer, No skimmer?
Heater?
Water changes?

Thanks....it's been a while since I've done this....2004 I think...

Powerhead and heater man have at it. I think water changes slow the process JMO. I wouldn't use a skimmer you shouldn't have alot of crud with clean rock.

o man, Mark is asking cycling questions. Never thought id see this day come. guess even the pros need help from time to time eh?

No lights, no water changes, no skimmer. Heater and good water movement do the trick.

Add a raw table shirimp in a stocking or mesh bag for two days and then remove it, although you might get enough ammonia from anything left over from before the uber-cooking.

Did I really just give Cully advice on cycling a tank? Odd indeed.

Mark I usually cycle it in the tank I'm going to use. I run the skimmer, use low light and toss in a damsel after several days. Since the rock stack is not set, I get him out after the tank is cycled. Are you going bear bottom?

Basically laziness on my part. I could have just looked it up, but there are several ways to skin a cat. Just seeing how others do it.

Mark, I'll have a shallow SB. Tank isn't set up yet, but no reason I can't get the rocks going ahead of time.

Thats what URS is here for lol:thumbsup:. As you said there are many ways to do it.

Smart move Mark I did that as well with my current tank. My rock was from the 90 and I wish that I cooked mine before using it again. Looking foward to seeing how you make out with yours.
