Starting Ozone

I've removed my UV and I think I might try using Ozone for better water clarity and purity.

My system is about 80 gallons and uses Phosguard, XP1000sss skimmer, and a waterfall style algae turf scrubber.

I plan to start at a small dosage of about 25 and ramp up to the recommended dosage. I run a Full Apex and I plan to get an ORP probe so that I can shut down the ozone if things get wacky.

Here's what I was thinking:

Are there better options than using a skimmer to mix the ozone into the water?

Should the ORP probe be placed before or after the ozone effluent area?

You don't need to run that much ozone. Else you will run into all of the pitfalls of over dosing.

Try to find one that uses 50 ml/hr or less.

I use this -

I run it on a timer, at night, on/off every other hour. I keeps my water crystal clear without the hassles that using too much ozone give you.

I also use a uv sterilizer, Coralife turbotwist.

I rather get the other ozone unit from BRS. Thats the one I have. THe thing is, you have to becareful with ozone.

I stopped using ozone as the tank is in my room. I would wake up with difficulties breathing.

This is the main reason why you want to use a unit that produces 50 ml/hr or less. You want to avoid this.

I forgot to add, that I use my skimmer to draw the ozone, and it skims out the impurities.

Wildman is right. I run 50mg aqua medic on 200 gallons of water. No issues, and have been running ozone for 25 years, way before they made orp probes. Aqua medic bought out sanders if your familiar with the brand. Would suggest undersizing your ozone generator and not rely on orp probe as the orp probes tend to get dirty and give false readings.
As far as best way to induce its, skimmers work just fine. They do make ozone reactors but then you have to deal with a noise air pump which can work against the back pressure. On your size tank a 50mg would give you desired results and less chance of overdosing/ leaking ozone into your room etc. They say to run the skimmer output thru carbon, I never have and am still alive.

Okay thanks, ordered 2x ET50 Weipro 50mg units.

I'm looking into maybe getting air dryers. The plan right now is to just run them on my 30 gallon and 80 gallon system through the skimmers. The Tunze 9004 in the smaller system seems to say to just hook up the Ozone generator directly into the air intake hose.

No instructions on the Super Reef Octopus XP1000sss on how to hook up ozone to it. I might just go with a reactor maybe for that system.

Air dryers greatly increase the ozone production, as well as prolonging the life of the ozonizer.

air dryer will help if you have humidity . i have a dehumidifier in my equipment closet so don't need to worry about an air dryer, the beads are a high maintaince item. They make air dryers, or just use a dehumidifier near the intake. both ways work well.

I'm gonna tag along.
I just started ozone today.
How long should it run for? I'm using my skimmer for it omega 150 the ozone puts out 200 mg an hour, it an enaly Ozx-300u
So far it's Benin on most of the day today, I'm not sure if my orp it's set correctly.
My controller is an aquaticlife ORP ONLY.
Do I need to calibrate the probe? It came in a smAll container on the glass tip of the probe.

not familiar with your brand monti, but in general you would have to calibrate the probe, Is the output adjustable. ? you didn't post your tank size so kinda hard to say how often it should run. Does it measure your orp, if you have low orp to begin with it might run more often since you just added it to your system.... I run mine 24/7

No the out of the ozone generator is not adjustable.

My tank size is 100gallons with the sump.

It seems a general guideline for starting ozone in terms of dosage is starting at 10mg/hr per 25 gallons.

If you generator can only 250mg/hr is it possible to only run the ozone generator a shorter period of time or would that much ozone entering the skimmer at once be dangerous. I'm guessing the latter is true.

My Poseidon 200 is controlled by my profilux and the orp probe. I have it set to turn off when it hits 380 mV but it seems to fluctuate on its own as low as 250.

I know manufacturers go X ozone for X system volume. Its a big ballpark, and its because of the difficulties in measuring or estimating flow. But its the wrong way to size ozone. We should be going by ozone concentration in the chosen contact vessel. I choose protein skimmer.

Lets see... if I could design a salt system starting with 1/4 gram an hour of ozone.

I go for 0.03mg/l, so at 1/4 gram that's 37 gallons per minute. And I would like a two minute dwell in the skimmer so a 74 gallon skimmer volume. And a 60 minute turnover is good, so system volume is 2200 gallons.

For 100 gallons I'm buying a 40mg or less and it must have a means to dial it back.

Hey guys,

I'm trying to figure out how to set up an ozone system for my 120G...

So if I buy the redsea 50mg/hr ozone generator, what else do I need. I plan to run it to my Vertex Omega Skimmer which has an ozone port and is suppose to be ozone safe. I need an air pump too right? The manual says I need to run carbon from the skimmer output in case of residual ozone.. how do I do this? I have a carbon reactor but my skimmer output just flows directly back into the sump.

I already have an Apex with an ORP probe.. Readings show around 320 right now..

Let me know if this setup is correct:

1.) Connect air pump to ozone inlet
2.) Connect ozone outlet to ozone port on skimmer
3.) Set up APEX so that it turns off the ozone when ORP reaches something like 380 and turn it back on when ORP is at something like 320
4.) Optionally, use the dryer prior to ozone inlet if I want to use a dryer, which is optional?

Am i missing anything.. do I really need carbon?

Also running NP media right now in a bio reactor.. I assume the bio reactor will not work properly anymore with ozone right?

Hey timber, so if I understand you correctly, all I need is the ozone genreator and I DO NOT need an air pump? I am hooking the ozone to my skimmer (ozone safe) and so the skimmer will induce (suck) the air?

Ya, I'm not familiar with your skimmer, but in general just hook the ozone generator up to the venturi input on your skimmer... you want it (generator) at least a couple inches higher than the skimmer so in event of power outage it won't get wet, could use a check valve, but that adds another thing to possibly go wrong... Yes to ozone safe tubing, I change my tubing at my annual fish tank inspection, probably overkill but cheap insurance. I run a tall external skimmer and don't want a flood.

Alright, even just using it briefly in my nano 30 gallon system, the water clarity even a day later is Stupendous.

I'm now on a mission to find a unit that can do 1-5mg/hr so I can run it continuously in my little Tunze 9004 for that system. I think I might also purchase the Avast Ozone reactor for my larger system.

Even with non super clarity glass, it's almost unbelievable how transparent the nano system has become.
