Starting Ozone

I have the Weipro ET-100 hooked up to my skimmer powerhead. It doesn't have any numbers on the dial, just min and max. Will an ORP meter tell me exactly how much ozone is being released? I just kept turning it up a little notch each day until the tank scent went away.

Won't ozone turn nitrite to nitrate and possibly starve out those little bugs that like to eat nitrite? And if your heavy on ozone and the gen quits, should you test for nitrite for a while?

It could convert nitrite into nitrate, but I don't know if it would be efficient enough to cause a problem with the biological filter.

That said, nitrite is not very toxic in seawater (unlike freshwater). So there is never a need to measure nitrite in a reef aquarium, unless you are doing it during the initial cycle for fun. :)

I discuss that here:

Nitrite and the Reef Aquarium

Im subscribing, I have always wanted to learn more about ozone usage but Im concerned about the dangers of it going wrong.

While back i had issues with ozone and carbon grind causing bad lateral line and fin rot. Its mostly gone now but how are people getting around this issue especially when skimmer has big pump and output to run over some carbon. Randy ?...i also run hard uv and vodka vinegar dose and have very strong lighting. Like 13 mh 400 watts and led and t 5 So the ozone clears up water so much that i get sps burn and rtn stn. So all the above i hve stopped and tend to run 300 to 320 redix just with skimming and carbon. Wasnt sure the ozone was worth the extra 40 points of orp or tangs with no fins. Lol.

There may be something to the ozone and/or carbon black and impacts on fish. It is a persistent concern that hasn't really been proven one way or the other, as far as I know.

As I said, I have been running Ozone without carbon since 1980. I run my ozonator at full capacity into a large skimmer and so far no problems. How long should I run it this way before I think there is a problem?

You ever test for residual ozone or bromide?

I seem to recall that you said (years ago) that you ran it into a refugium/algae filter and that the algae grew better at the far end and not near the ozone water introduction. That suggests some toxicity that is depleted as it runs through the refugium, but it might also be something else. :)

I do use it in a large skimmer then it goes into an algae tray but for many years there was no algae tray and it just went back into the tank. The tray is only in there for a few years out of all the years it has been running. I wouldn't just inject Ozone into a tank, but a decent size skimmer should disapate the gas well before it would put enough of it in the water to affect anything. But you would know more about that than I would. I am just recounting how it works in my tank

For a 50g TWV tank with tunze 9004 skimmer, is a 50mg/hr fixed output ozone generator ok to install by just connecting to the airline? Can I run it on a timer like 8hrs a night and will that be safe?

No guarantees going that route. Best really is to run the ozonizer off of a redox controller.

I would use a timer to go with 4-6 hours, on/off every other hour. That is how I run mine, on both my 150g and 90g. Try to run as minimal as possible to achieve the same affect.

Here is my 2 cents on orp readings.
After talking to various companies on orp / there probes are to be checked over a period of time / so if something die's in the tank you might not know for a week or more ( this cracked me up ) So after doing research I have been replacing my hobby grade equipment with G F Signet. I am controlling my calcium reactor with it and you can watch the numbers changing asap. I am waiting for the rest of my system controller to be built. It will have 2 redox probes one for tank and one for sulfur denitrator. IMO they dont read fast enough or process fast enough. I could be wrong on this. Hope this helps .

Signet, when your livestock counts and cost doesn't. I can tell you those ORP probes are about the best you can buy. You will be doing two point quinhydrone calibrations and they might only be off a few mV at month 18. At month 19-20 they will be over 50 mV and the controller wont let you calibrate them. They are very accurate for 18 months and then the junction goes south.

I don't know that its worth the cost at home but if you do go with GF be wary of buying the cheapest ones any old place on the net. They have a shelf life and they will sell them to you many years old. The date code should be less than a year when you get them. After two years they may only last a few months. These things are too expensive to pay near list for old probes. You can extend it some by storing them in the refrigerator but do not let them freeze.

Probes they make this month (May 2015)will have J0 on them.

I have been running my ozone generator into my large skimmer since about 1980 or so. It is 200mg/hr and it is always turned up as high as it can go. I don't use carbon.
My reef has SPS, LPS and all the fish are spawning. No problems yet.
You can see the thing on the wall on the top left of the picture. Just above and to the left of the boiler thermometer

Paul I have the same one.Works like a champ. Quick question though. Whats the grey thing on the wall and how do you work it?;)
