STILL LIKE YOUR-Gyre XF150 ???

I like the idea of the Gyre and flow is good on my 6ft 200 when it works. Good concept but poor execution IMO with cheap Chinese parts. After some experience with Jebao I think Jebao was better quality.

1) Needs cleaning frequently. If any plant or other matter in the tank it clogs fast. A royal pain to put back together. Sometimes it works or you may find yourself redoing several times to get it to work.

2) Rotors are poor quality. On two separate occasions it started making noise and when disassembled blades had actually snapped off.

3) The drive grommet/cog are just bad. They are prone to push through and fall in and/or push the grommet inside the rotor where its pretty close to impossible to retrieve in one piece. I also had one strip itself and of course there are no spares included. I ordered a couple more along with two new rotors and one side still does not work right. I spent $50 on parts when I should have returned the thing.

4) They do seem to be making some improvements. The new drive cogs I got now have flanges on the outside to keep them from falling through the grommet and to better position it.

5) If Jebao copies it then it will likely be a big improvement over this thing.

6) Oh yeah "it gets quieter after break in". What BS anything over 60% and its pretty loud especially being the whole things under water.

7) I knew this from the start but typical of Maxspect no external control like apex. The controller is just ok but my real peeve is the feed mode where you have to cycle through all modes to get to feed. Pause even for a split second on a mode and when feed finishes it won't return to original mode.

8) Even at a decent depth it tends to be a great micro bubble generator. It pulls down a vortex from the surface and blasts micro bubbles pretty frequently.

4" deep, don't see any vortex or micro bubbles?

Mines running about 4.5-5" on center now and it was churning bubbles as recently as today. Had to turn it down to about 50% before it stopped.

That's a little odd.
Mine is 2" from the surface at 100%.
Ripples the water surface like crazy but I don't notice any vortex or micro bubbles.
I wonder if it has something to do with the direction of the cages or maybe you got the hyperdrive version. ;)

Don't know what the deal is... I usually also run at 100% during the day and turn it down at night. Doesn't happen all the time but when it does it definitely generates a tank full of micro bubbles. It may also have something to do with the fact that currently the right side does not put out the same flow as the left (side pulling vortex). Even at the depth I run I get good surface agitation with zero surface tension and good return flow across the bottom of the tank. As far as cage orientation pretty much stock positions such that flow is parallel to the bottom of the tank.

These pumps are definitely sensitive to cage orientation. I didn't pay much attention when I cleaned the first one this past weekend, and when I started it up it was pointing straight down, and dug a nice hole in the sand before I got it turned off.

I could definitely see a cage orientation such that the Gyre would draw water from the top of the pump, not underneath. In that case I think it would draw a helluva vortex.

I did this and point them straight up. Sitting only 2/5 inches from the top, when I fired up it shot water up a few inches right onto my overflow lid.

I appreciated the power and adjusted accordingly.

That must be it. He either had it in a AA or BB combination. In my tank, I had the exact same problem even at 10% and it would create a vortex and pull in bubbles.

I must be dense, because I cannot figure out what combination of rotors/cages to use in order to make each side of the pump run the opposite of the other during reverse gyre mode. Every combination I've tried either results in a vortex like above (since the intake faces up when using two of the same cage), or the flow going somewhere I don't want.

I'd like one side, when running forward, aimed slightly towards the surface creating surface agitation, while the other side comes out at a lesser flow at that 45 degree angle downward like when running in reverse. Then when running backwards in reverse gyre mode, the other side does the exact same thing - stronger flow aimed towards the surface while the other side slightly downwards at a lesser flow.

Does this make sense?

So are snails an issue with these? I read someone saying snails were getting in and breaking the it. I have xf130, going to hook it up today..

I did get mini ceriths stuck in fins and they were removed with no apparent damage. I did mention I had fins shear off but that was much later on although the ceriths could have cracked them and they sheared over time. That's one reason I just went ahead and bought some parts vs. haggling with the distributor. I needed the drive cogs anyway and just bought two additional rotors. A lot of hassle in the 90 days I have used it.

Do you implicate any kind of night mode, like shutting it off manually, plugging it into a timer or do you just leave it on ?

I manually turn mine down at night.... It is a lot louder when the house us quiet and I am sleeping about 6 feet away from the tank. I don't fund it loud during the day.
Apparently there is a new mount that they have developed. To anyone thinking of getting one make sure it has the new mount.
I really hope that the new mounts will be provided to us early adopters but I am not holding my breath....

I have had my 150 in my 90g reef since early November.

Not sure why some people are claiming tons of issues with their units... mine has been trouble - free and quiet since Day One. Run it @ 40% (remember this is only a 90g tank) and have had zero issues with it.

It replaced a pair of wp40s (which themselves replaced a pair of mp40s) and is the only circ pump in the tank now. Zero dead spots, great flow, corals seem to love it.

I cleaned it once; more out of curiosity after reading that they needed to be cleaned 'frequently' on here than out of any noticeable drop in performance. I did not think it was difficult to clean or disassemble at all. The rotor fins are delicate, yes, but they are thin due to the relatively compact diameter of the rotor housings.

I am happy enough with it that when I upgrade tank size (thinking of doing a 180g next) I will purchase a 2nd Gyre and set them up on opposite ends of the tank, alternating which one is 'on' every hour or so.

I've been running mine on my 4' 120 since the week they came out in November with no problems.

I run it horizontally on one end. I have an MP-10 on the back wall perpendicular to the Gyre. I have found the spot just below the Gyre to be the one dead spot. So the MP-10 pushes water forward there.

I will say, in pulse mode, it is louder than I would like. I am looking forward to Maxspect releasing the new mount (the one for the 130) that is supposed to reduce the noise level. I run it around 60% constant mode at night and it's silent. I would love to be able to control it so that I could switch between pulse and constant without having to do it manually.

I replaced a pair of RW-15s with the Gyre.

well after replacing the props 4 times mine has been sent down to the minor leagues and being used to keep my chaeto spinning in my fuge.

I have a 5' 180 gallon with center overflow box. Left side of tank bas a MP60 right side has a MP40.

This is my first bare bottom tank. Was originally thinking about adding more MP's to the back of the tank to ensure i have random flow and keep stuff off the bottom.

However this is an in wall and while i have enough room behind the tank for a step stool and such think the MP's hanging off the back would get bumped a lot.

So now wondering about one of these on the back on each side of the over flow box.

Any thoughts?

reelredfish, I have peninsula tank too. I run MP40's on both sides of overflow and a gyre x130 on center of overflow as high as I can go. Helps move surpface water up top and has no problem bouncing off the glass 4 ft away.

I have an xf130 in my 40B, liking it a lot. It is loud over 50%, but my skimmer is much louder. I just love the way the flow is on it.

Just got a 150 yesterday... it came with the new style quiet mount as well so they are shipping with the new mounts now. Quiet as a mouse and pushes a ton of water... love it in my barebottom... blew out the crud from the nooks and crannys pretty crazy... should keep my tank much cleaner now...

Just hoping long term it rocks as long as my Tunze's did...
