Stocking Ideas : 650 Gallon System

Hey guys,

Growing tired of the Tangs in my tank only having each other to play (fight) with.

What are some good suggestions of next additions to our tank?

Currently:
4" YB Blue Tang, 3" Yellow Tang, 3" Chevron Tang, 5" Black Tang, Cleaner Wrasse, Black Ice Clown, 3 Pajama Cardinals.

In QT:
4" Lineatus Wrasse, 5 Lyretail Antias

Tank is 120x29x31" w/ 200 gallon sump. Going for a mixed reef.

Would like to add a Crosshatch Trigger Pair, but feel they might eat smaller fish if introduced too soon...

BTW: Got some crazy green coralline when I put the tank in hypo (thought I have ich, but didn't...).

As soon as I saw the title, I thought crosshatch pair. You can likely find a small pair, 3" or so. I'd worry more about CUC than other fish with the triggers.

Tired of the tang on tang warfare... :headwally:

Thought about a ton of smaller fish, but it would take forever with QT to get a number where the tangs might be distracted...

Get some large angels. Stay away from Queens, Emperors and Passers. Most other Large angels are peaceful relatively speaking and you could add in a handful of dwarf angels into the mix

Yeah would like a Potters and Flame.

Wouldn't the larger Angels pick at coral?

All depends on the fish, how large the system and how well you feed them. But large angels would look impressive in your tank. pygmy angels would get lost in there

Group of pyramids to start with for sure.

I love a semilarvatus or maybe two in that size of tank.

Could you acclimate some sailfin mollies? Those would be nice.

There's a pair of xhatch near me, I believe they were 800 for the pair m-3.5" f 3"

I'm not a angel expert but Copps has a lot of large angels and corals. He believes (as do I) that they will eat unhealthy corals... With that said a large angel plucked from the ocean stands a much better chance of nipping at corals, especially if not well fed

Since it's a mixed reef and a large tank, I don't think you want to deal with the need to catch a fish. Moving rocks and chasing a fish in a 650g doesn't sound fun. So if you value your corals more than fish, most large Angels aren't for you tank, except for watanabei and masked swallowtail angel or bellus angel. Most butterflies aren't reef safe and more delicate than most other species, therefore probably not a good idea either. You probably should consider housing some large reef fish. So species like high fin snapper, vlimingi tang, or dussumieri tang are the likely choices. If your tank has a secure cover, a school of tile fish will look wonderful. Anthias is an obvious choice in a reef setting. Clowns and BTA will also add colors to your tank.

Honestly I think the coolest thing in a big tank is heck of a lot of small fish and a few bigger, semi aggressives. Crosshatch would be perfect. It would be insanely cool to see a ton of smaller fish darting amongst sps when a big guy cruises past.

I'd say an angel and or trigger or two and then small fish of all kinds! Groups of Anthias, wrasse, Cardinals, damsels, gammas, heck maybe even some chromis if there are enough OTHER bullies and groups of fish in the tank to cut down on in-species aggression.

That's my plan, at least make it look like a real reef. Lots of little guys and a few big'ins

I've noticed that some collectors are finding really small male Crosshatch triggers now.

I guess getting an under 4" pair would give me plenty of time to add smaller fish to the tank without worrying about them ending up in the triggers.

Going to need to read more about angels and reefs... I guess it's up to the individual fish, heard of dwarfs going after coral as well.

Would it be OK to mix different species on anthias schools?

How out multiple pairs of clowns?

I put in 9 different kinds of clowns in my 180 gallon a year ago. The platinum got picked on right away so he was moved within a day. The Wyoming white got picked on several months ago so he was also moved. And just last week I had to move the frostbite, so I'm down to 6.

Without having any personal experience, I have heard in a tank your size multiple clown pairs are possible so long as you provide hosting sites on opposite sides of the tank. And then there are those that have taken a brood from just weened and kept all of them (27 was one thread) up to and beyond maturity. In either case plenty of hosting/hangout territory and frequent feedings seem to cut down significantly with aggression. BRS just started a clown harem tank, and I have been watching videos of that in awe and research modes simultaneously.

i know you already have some Tangs, but if my tank were that size I'd go for a group of convicts (not something you see everyday, and very cool), say 5-7.
