Stonefish ID / Video

Hi Guys,

LFS sold this as a frogfish but I'm pretty sure it's a stonefish. Can you confirm what it is if you know?

This is a quick video of him eating, couldn't get him to come all the way out of his cave (he's too fast at grabbing the food!) so not sure if you will be able to ID him properly.

Actually I think he may be a Sculptured Frogfish - (Halophryne queenslandiae). What do you think?

It appears to use it's anal fins to walk and possess full pectoral fins. Most antenna rids have modified pectoral fins that appear as articulated hands or arms
I have no clue what fish it is and if you can get better images - we can keep guessing

Yes, not enough detail in the video for me to attempt a guess.

Sure looks like a toadfish to me...altho all we can see is the head, which is what I'm going on.

I tend to go with Greg's opinion. Not at all like a stonefish.

I would say toadfish as well, looks like my orange one but brown. Does it have a long body and kinda swim like an eel? Google oyster toadfish and see if it looks like that

Just watched it again, definitely a toad, looks pretty mature by the head. Will need a full body shot to figure out which exact species

I'll chime in and agree, toadfish (not venomous like a stonefish). Like and angler, it will eat anything it can swallow, and is best in a species tank. I had an orange toadfish for many years, and it was one of my favorites, though it hid a fair bit.

+1 for toadfish, our local LFS just got two orange ones in, they are very cool. A little less dangerous than my stonefish.
