struck gold at LFS

A buddy owns a LFS and will give me a call whenever he gets something out of the ordinary. Well, two days ago he called and said someone traded in a black ribbon eel that was eating frozen. I was somewhat skeptical but I went to check it out and sure enough it was eating krill in the shop. It's been in my tank less than 24 hours and has taken thawed mysid and chopped gulf shrimp. I'm gonna try octopus and squid later in the week. Super stoked, I've been wanting one for years but I never wanted to watch one starve to death in my tank. Please excuse the dirty glass.

Gorgeous animal. Saw a blue one in person once and it was just out of this world too. I hope it does well for you.

Awesome! I hope to have one one day. They are reef safe....not fish safe.

It's definitely eyeing the damsels that are in the tank, they are just a hair too big at the moment. He does go after them if they get close to the pipe openings though. It's just a matter of time before he catches them.

It appears to be starting the transition to blue. There are blue flecks all around the gills.

Juvis are black, transition to blue and then to yellow. Some of the blue specks are visible in the first pic. My camera(or my lack of camera skills) doesn't really pic them up but the blue specks really stand out in person

Fed it some of my nems wild caught salmon. it ate that with some passion.

spent most of the afternoon trying to escape proof the tank. ribbon is slender and the fimby proof eggcrate wouldn't cut it.

That's so crazy. I wonder what the evolutionary significance of those color transitions is. Awesomeness. :spin2:

Oh god, let's not open that can of worms again on these forums. We all know evolution was made up by Hallmark to sell more cards.

Seriously though, awesome ribbon eel. The amount of people that have gotten them to eat frozen is so small that you have an incredible opportunity! Good luck.

Beautiful, Jordan!

Saw your Fimby in the store the other day. At least the back side of him, face was hidden.

:)

Hey ken, I don't think john is too happy with my fimby. may be a little harder to sell than he thought.

Here's a quick vid of the ribbon eating a piece of salmon. He behaves similar to a snake trying to find the rats head before swallowing. He won't commit to eating until it finds the correct angle, often giving the shrimp time to attempt the steal
