Stumbling onto a Beauty

Last Sunday i went to go grab a sps frag from my local store I took a walk over to the anemone tank naturally because im always looking for a beauty.

My gigantea was sold to me by another reefer but what i saw amazed me.

A purple base green tentacles and a mouth that looked like a nipple. Id like to introduce you to my new Magnifica. They are on opposite ends of my tank and to tell you the truth this is the first anemone i am going to show pictures now instead of waiting to see if it makes it. Its sticky and it grabebd some mysis when i fed my clowns this am. My male akinydos slept in it last night for about three hours.

Well see how it goes im nervous but excited i stumbled upon it.

Also after seeing the purple base version and the verracruce i am thinking the gigantea and the magifica are maybe cross breeds or something

Here it goes

Classic H. magnifica, I would not suspect any cross breeding or hybridization in the pictured specimen.

Heteractis species have verrucae, it is one of the ID characteristics. In H. magnifica, color of verrucae matches the column, but darker. If yours was a red base, they would be dark red/maroon. Green, dark green, etc.

Color of the oral disk, mouth, varies, in H. magnifica although most of mine have had green or yellow highlights.

Best of luck with it, it looks pretty darn good now.

So far so good, mouth is still tight hasn't shrunk down yet, it looks preety good.

I wanna feed it but I don't wanna stress it out.

As of now my clowns have not wondered over to sleep in it.

If you want to feed it, consider giving it some mysis shrimp. It looks pretty big, but smaller foodstuff may work out for you. Good luck with a nice find.

Funny Thing you brought up mysis

Funny Thing you brought up mysis

I dont feed any of my fish or nems silver sides anymore. Too many bad expierences. This morning 15 balled up mysis enriched with selcon right down the hatch watch this for time lapse eating.

Travelr - I mean many many thousand of years about some type of anemone cross bred with gigantea to create magnifica or some cross breed. I never noticed the verracruce was as defined as my gigantea.

So far so good im a very happy camper

Please keep us posted. I've had two mags that looked incredible for the first 30 days and then went downhill for unknown reasons.
I'm not ready to try them again. I wish you the best.

Very nice anemone you found. Looks like you got a very healthy one. I think that is the key with this species--and of course good husbandry thereafter. For it to eat so soon after purchase indicates it has already acclimated for you. It took mine a week or more to accept food. Good luck and enjoy it!

Very pretty, hope he stays well and lives well for you.

I also hope you don't have many other things in that tank with him, I believe the H. magnifica's have a reputation for going on a road trip and leaving a path of devastation behind them.

Would you mind elaborating on the issue with silver sides? I am currently feeding my GBTA a 1/4 silverside every 2-3 days, it also gets occasional flake and mysis but not much.

Thanks

Silversides

Do a search on RC alot of people complain about them.

I fed a couple small chuncks of silversides to a couple clone bubble tips two years ago and they both got very messed. It looked as if they were disinegrating from the inside and the area around the mouth was breaking apart. I moved them to qt left them alone.

Both had scars in the area of their mouths where the skin broke down but they both lived.

This Magnifica anemone is doing well so far still tight mouthed and it ate a 3 centimeter peice of thawed rods food today again. \

Its def lookin good
