Stupid things we've all done

I always like to purge my rodi when I've finished filling my 55 gallon drum. The waste water goes right down the sloptank drain. Usually i let it run about 10 minutes. A couple weeks ago, I got distracted and left it running.... for a week!! (we went to Chicago for the Karate Nationals) OMG I can't imagine what that's going to cost me.
ps. please don't tell the wife. okay?

I score myself a 8.50 for stupidity on this one.

I've forgotten to turn certain ball valves and after taking 40 gallons out of my display, promptly poured about 25-30 gallons of new saltwater right down the drain. This is followed by panic mode and mixing of more salt water for the tank which the corals do NOT appreciate.

I've knocked the line off of my mixing vat pump shooting water straight up to the ceiling and all over myself and electrical outlets.

But my old standby is forgetting to turn off the ATO during water changes. Not great for specific gravity.....

I used to fill 5 gallon buckets of RODI one at a time when I lived in an apartment. I can't count the number of times that they overflowed. I overflowed buckets on the first floor of my house a few times as well. My wife finally told me to fill them up in the basement, and they overflowed down there a few times as well.

Finally I got a 55 gallon barrel and hooked up a float valve upside down in it. Now when the water level gets high, a maxi-jet pumps water into the utility sink.

"I wonder if this gigantic submersible pump works? I don't want to run it dry. I know, I'll fill the sink with water, drop the pump in, and turn it on."

For a smart person, I can be pretty stupid.

Oh, and I think there are really only two types of reef keepers: those who HAVE made a mess with RO/DI, and those who WILL make a mess with RO/DI.

This wasn't one of my finer moments....

I had a clip on fan blowing across the top of my tank. It was awkwardly clipped on and wasn't really secure. I told myself this as I reached in the tank over the side of it. I reached for a coral or something in the water and knocked the fan in with my chest. The adrenaline hit me as I quickly yanked my hand out of the water. Thankfully, the GFCI tripped instantly.

This is a better solution for you!

I used to fill RO buckets in the sink of my old apartment. I would over fill them but wasn't too worried about it. What always messed me up was the waste water tube coming out of thesink and spilling onto the floor. I had a clamp system but that failed. I eventually figured out a system using a strong magnet. Worked great with a stainless sink.

I've been sprayed in the face countless times when turning on a pump.

Do stocking mistakes count here? I've had some bone headed moves there.

Before we remodeled our kitchen was using some of the space for a 30g mixing station.

I was down the road at a friends place when my wife called to not so politely request my presence at home due to the bin dumping over.

Came home to an arcing pwr strip and 30gs of sw running down the floor registers into our furnace!

YES!!!

Last time I reached in the tank for something and knocked over the frag rack. In an attempt to keep all the SPS frags from falling into my hammer coral. I pulled a 2 1/2" piece if rainbow monti out and placed it on top of my T5 fixture. I found it there the next night right where I left it.

Oh and I've played the RODI game time and time again.

Walked into Tom's shop lol... " that fish could live in a toilet" that stupid 180 is pure evil. I didn't have a chance.

Never got married, but I've flooded my kitchen so many times I can't count. I've flooed my living room by messing with my overflow. I didn't let my silicone cure long enough when building my sump and nearly wiped everything out.
Most recently- I glued my fingers together while mounting a frag. That hurt.

about five years ago i shut off the drain lines in my basement which controlled the drains of twelve 20 gal tanks dressed in oak and covering two adjacent walls in an L shape in my livingroom . well needless to say when i turned on the DART HAMMERHEAD and made it upstairs and halfway across my house all i could see was a fifteen foot wall of water six feet high falling onto my $5000.00 brand new carpets !!!!!!!!!!!!.it seemed so very unreal when i focused on that water "wall" that i stood there for five seconds staring at it before reality sank in that there was a couple of hundred gallons of water falling harmlessly to my floor ????????????? i never ,EVER used the %*&^$* valves again and have always found that day to be somewhat amusing whenever i think back to it . thanks for the laugh !
