Stylo328's 187 (60x30x24) Build Thread

Hello all,

Well after a few weeks of looking at pictures of my old 180, regretting selling it :headwally:, and looking at some of the great build and picture threads on the FMAS forum, we have decided to set up another large-ish tank.

We have found and agreed to buy a used custom built tank locally. Dimensions are 60 x 30 x 24, in 3/4" glass with a rear center overflow. Gallonage for the tank comes in at 187 and the deep dimension should make for a great canvas.

The plan is to have a minimalistic or "bonsai" style bare-bottom tank. To achieve that look, we decided to try and find the largest pieces of rock we could. In search of "large pieces", we went to Dryrock USA yesterday where we purchased 180 pounds of dry rock, comprised of pieces weighing between 20 and 35 pounds.

Tank will not be available for another week or so. Therefore not many pictures to post for now. Nevertheless, the whole family is very excited about the build and we look forward to your tagging along for the ride.

Thanks fort the offers, I will definitely need help along the way. Ive started a large part of the prep for the project, addressing the floor under the tank.

I pulled the carpet in the living room (tanks and carpet don't mix)

And replaced it with water proof, commercial interlocking vinyl flooring

The tank will go along the left wall.

That flooring looks pretty slick. Do you mind sharing the brand?

Thanks. It is the interlocking vinyl from lumber liquidators. It's commercial grade and floats like a laminate. I'll post the brand when I get home. Best part, cutting is via "score and pop" only had to use the jig for the multi-angle cuts.

I had thee opportunity to play with the rock this afternoon, very happy with the size, shape and quantity we got.

I found one of our towels to have dimensions almost identical to the new tank. So I laid it out on the floor in the garage and spent a while mocking up the aquascape today. Let me know what you think.

Can't wait to get started!

Finally, this is the side view from the dining room.

I am very happy with how it looks. Now I only hope I can replicate the aquascape in the tank.

Thanks guys.

I am researching skimmers for the build. What are your thoughts on the Bubble Magus NAC-9? It is rated for a larger tank, but I plan on stocking and feeding heavy.

Nice location for the tank. If it ever leaks it will be contained to that step down section of the house. At the point if it ever happens you will officially have an indoor pond. LOL. Of course i dont wish that upon you though! :)

my friend has a nac-9 on a heavily populated 180 and although they impeller broke initially the problem was resolved by the manufacturer and his since worked very well without a problem. produces tons of gunk

I've been running the nac5 for about 3 years. Haven't had any issues up until recently with the pump not spinning the right way. When it works its great.

Thanks for all of the feedback. The NAC9 is the most cost effective, but I am open to looking at other options.
