Stylo328's 187 (60x30x24) Build Thread

It isn't too bad, especially given that the tank is in the main tv viewing area. We watched a movie last night and the lights did not interfere.

Btw, I saw your old lights at Ally's place. Not sure what you upgraded to, but those were very nice.

Yes so far things are working well. I like the colors that this light gives. I can't speak on the par readings yet though. I have to wait and see if I could borrow the meter again.

I noticed that some of the zoas in the new tank were not looking their usual. So I decided to do an H2o2 dip. I found a zoa eating nudibranch.

All zoas in the new tank have now been dipped and only the one was identified.

I'll keep you posted on how the zoas survived the dip and wether or not they bounce back.

I dipped them for ten minutes in a concentration of 50/50 tank water and H2o2. Then they had a quick dip in RO and then a rinse in tank water before going into the tank.

OK... Very good... Just wanted to know. That should knock out just about all the unwanted items.

How do they look?

As of last night a few of the frags were starting to show some skirt. Otherwise they were all closed. I am really hoping that today they will start to open.

I'll keep you posted.

Lost two small colonies of zoas after the dip. All others have bounces back.

As far as fish go, we added a mystery wrasse, Midas blenny, exquisite wrasse, and a PBT. All seemed to be doing great and eating well. But unfortunately last night I discovered that that the Midas blenny has a significant amount if ich.

I am going to continue feeding and hope for the best. As far as I know, there is no effective treatment for ich in the DT.

UUGH.... That is why I have a QT tank. A quick 10g tank with a floss filter helps and is quick.

How long do you keep them in QT?

I may just tear down the tank this weekend, pull out all of the fish and set up a QT.

Recommendation instead.

Set up QT...

Base it on how many fish you need to have in it.

Run the QT EMPTY... no substrate or anything. Maybe some pvc pipes for hiding spots. THAT IS IT.

Let the tank go fowl (fish less) for 6 weeks.

Dont flip yet.... It takes know ICH at least that long to spawn and get in the substrate and into the next host.

You only have to put fish in it. Not snails and such. They can not be a known host for ich.

That will save you some headache.

Keep in mind the timer resets everytime you add a fish to the QT. So putting a few each week will not help it and make it longer.

There is a VERY GOOD thread on ICH and starting a QT in the new member section.

A QT is actually quick and simple.

The transfer method works well also but it's a little more work.

They were all clean today. I am going to make the transfer tomorrow into a qt tank. Even if I use a Rubbermaid tub. Then I will make another transfer Ito a 40br once I get it set up.

12-hours of work and we now have a 75-gallon QT, and have consolidated all frags from the 20 into the 187. More details later, church is about to start!

So, I ran out and purchased a non-drilled 78-gallon tank on Saturday morning. It's a used tank, but in descent shape. Stopped at HD on the way home and picked up 2x4s to assemble a stand. Got home, made all of the cuts and assembled this:

I filled the tank with fresh NSW from the local LFS and added a few pieces of PVC.

I added a heater with controller, a korilla, and a bio-wheel hang-on filter from the 20-gallon tank with the carbon and media removed.

Once the QT was set up, I started to acclimate the fish from the 20, while I emptied all of the LR from the 187.

Once all off the rock was out of the 187, I caught the fish and began to acclimate them as well. Once I added the fish to the QT, I began to slowly remove saltwater and replace with R/O to lower the salinity.

I replaced all of the rock in the 187 and then glued in all 60+ frags!

In total, project started at 9:00am and ended just after 1:00am. All fish are eating and seem to be doing well in QT. I am continuing to drop salinity daily until optimal level is achieved. Fish will remain in hypo-salinity for the direction of the 9-week period.

DT will remain fish-less for the 9-weeks.

watch for ammonia spikes, and remember the wrasse will try to bury itself at night and when it can't it will go nuts darting around until it calms down so get a lid on there or something. loving the skirt!
