SWC 1A Cone skimmer review

Interestingly enough I went to SWC's online site and they haven't updated any of their information on the skimmer. It still shows the older version and has the older specs. Maybe they will update it soon.

You know if you google SWC 1A Cone Skimmer or MSX 1A Cone skimmer a couple of online vendors pop up. Other than that I think it's unfair to pimp one vendor over another on a review thread. I ordered mine months ago, and just got it. There was some delays, but it was worth waiting for.

As far as milled and molded, I think a machine cuts out the plastic from a solid piece of plastic for milled, and for molded the liquid plastic is poured into a mold. If they are both precision, I doubt that either is better.

Well the skimmer is running wide open, and I am running it as dry as possible. The pump is so strong, the foam level is able to climb the full length of the cup with ease. Here is a picture of it 24 hrs after setting it.

The foam has all kinds of solid organics in it that actually makes it over the wall and isn't sticking to the inside of the neck. Here is a picture 48 hrs after setting it. Amazing that I have it set that dry and it still collects 1/3" to 1/2" skimmate a day.

That is very impressive.

The big difference between milled and molded is that there can be imperfections, or air bubbles in the molded or cast pieces that you can't always see. Milled is generally regarded as stronger. Athough injection molded plastic is very good construction IMO.

Measuring air with this meter. Brand new Dwyer RMB-53.

The ball was bouncing a little up and down between 70 and 80 SCFH. Mostly staying around 74-76 SCFH. Pretty close to what SWC claims it should do 75 SCFH or 2100+LPH.

Man the new SWC cone is really nice. Without a doubt one to seriously consider if you are looking at cone skimmers.

Ok the neck diameter DID increase for 2009. In 2008 the neck diameter was 130mm or 5.12 inches. For 2009 the neck diameter is 140mm or 5.51 inches. So approximately .4 inches wider. This was straight from an email from SWC. They measure from the outside diameter. Hope that clears up any neck questions. They also confirmed that the neck did increase 1" taller and the total skimmer height increased also 1/2".

Thanks for getting that info and clearing this up. I guess its an OD Vs ID and metric US and rounding. When I saw 5.5", I was thinking they went to the same neck size as the MSX250. I always go by ID. The MSX250 has a 150mm OD neck which is ~ 6" and is ~ 5.5" ID. This is what I consider a 5.5" neck. I guess SWC would say it is a 150mm or 6" neck. I'm glad to see they did not go that route and used a neck with an ID of just over 5".

I agree, I think the neck is as big as it should be. I think the extra heigth is nice but prefer the slightly smaller neck size of the original.

The new white Askoll is very powerful and I think it was a good idea that they bumped up the size but didn't go too big.

How does the askoll compare to the red dragon?
Which RD? There are a lot of different models.

Red Dragon 1500, it does 1500 lph at 38 watts. That's the pump that comes with the alpha 200 and 250 skimmers.

If MSX/SWC wants to charge as much as Royal Exclusiv, they should expect to be compared to it. I'm going to pick up a cone skimmer later this summer, I'm just doing my homework.

Just going by numbers, the RD that is on the Alpha 250 can do 1500 or 1800 LPH depending on the volute tube you use, Power is more like 50 - 53W. From what I see on this thread, the SWC is ~ 2100 LPH @ 70 - 75W.

I could be wrong on this, but isn't the Royal Exclusiv cone also made in China? And the SWC was out first, so really they are charging as much or more than the SWC. Plus the SWC can be run in recirc. There is nothing that is any more special on the Royal Exlusiv cone that I can see.

Its confusing. The Vertex cone is manufactured by R.E. in Germany which is the same company that makes BK skimmers. The Alpha 250 is not a "B.K." skimmer.

Thanks Scott.

My choice would be between this skimmer (SWC-1A/MSX-1A), the Alpha 200, or possibly one of the I-tech's (only if they get it to run with a tunze pump).
