tang compatability

Hi,
I am in the processof planning a new set up or when we move house in the near future.
Trying to get an idea of a stock list for this tank (probebly be 5'x3'x2' LxWxH), I cant decide between a vampire or orange shoulder tang. Would these get on together being of the same tang family?

Cheers
Mark

IMO, a 5 foot tank would be iffy for those 2...2 Acanthurus tangs together need plenty of room...Kind of unusual tank dimensions you mention there??? Do you have other options? Both cool fish though.

Hello. I'm not sure what a vampire tang is. Also do realize that Orange shoulders get huge and swim a lot. I have a zebrasoma and ancanthurus together and it was no proble. The PBT was in there first and well establised. I added the Black Tang about 2 months and the PBT gave him a little hell but the Black gave him a tail whack and everything is fine now. Heres a few shots of them. If you do decide to get them I would get them at the same time or get the small one first and than get a substantuially larger one later. That is what I did with my tangs. Regards, Tim

Vampire tang is aka Doublebanded Surgeonfish, Leutenant Surgeonfish. I think they are cool. I was thinking of one for my new tank but I have my heart set on an Achilles. I have talked to some people that have them and they all have nothing but good thing to say about them. Very peaceful especially since they are an Acanthurus. I would think if you added the vampire and the orange shoulder at the same time and kept them well fed you wouldn't have a problem.

The vampire or Leutenant tang (Acanthurus tennenti).
Thanks for the input guys.
Yes i have other options for the tank. I have 8' wallspace available to me, though its an SPS system and i want to incorporate a large frag tank in the set up and acouple of brood tanks for my breeding projects. Also the equipment needs to be hidden on the same wall.

I was thinking of a 6x2x2, but think the 3' depth to the tank would look stunning, and could really do without the cost of running a third halide that a 6'er would probebly need over the 5.

From my earlier marine days i do have it drummed into my head not to mix tangs of the same genus, but its a hard choice so wanted opinions, i have read that both are quite chilled as far as the Acanthurus genus go though to be honest i didnt realise the orange shoulder got quite that big.

Thanks again guys

I have heard of Orange Shoulder going either way as far as aggression, and would agree the Tennant Tang is fairly mild as far as acanthurus....I actually agree 5x3 would be pretty cool and a lot you could do aquascaping wise with that, was just curious as to the options you had.
