Tang getting beat up

I have 16 tangs all different. I added a purple tang. They beat the Crap out of him. He is in refugium now. looks like he will be okay. I put in a large trap 3 days ago.
My question is. If I catch 4 to 6 tangs and move them to sump for two weeks then put them all back in at once. Do you think two weeks is long enough?

I have never tried an acclimation box but have heard it works. Have you tried the "mirror trick"?. I was having trouble adding tangs to my tank and someone told me about this, and it has worked flawlessly ever since. Simply place a large handheld mirror outside the tank a day or 2 before introducing new fish. Add the new fish and remove the mirror once aggression has subsided. You will see the established fish hanging near the mirror and trying to fight with their reflections and not focusing entirely on the newly introduced fish.

Good luck!!!

The size of the tank means everything. Even the size, colour and shapes mean something too. Are all 16 housed in the same tank or amoung other tanks as well?

The size of the tank isn't going to make a difference unless its like 3000 gallon tank. Yes all 16 tangs are in one tank.

okay we all know you cant put 16 tangs in a 100 gallon tank. but if you have a 500 gallon tank you can put in 16 tangs. Is 500 gallons big enough to make it so all the tangs live in harmony yes it is.Is 500 gallons big enough that if you add a new tang the others will not pick on him? No... So Does size matter?

I have 6 in 220 and they fight....

Actually it would make no difference if it's a 3000 gallon tank... the bigger, the less of an impact the fish will have on each other. I would assume these fish are in the 500g tank mentioned in your signature? I'm honestly a little surprised they went so aggressively to the purple tang since there are so many of them. My personal experience is that the more tangs, the less they seem to care about new additions. Please do not take that as advice.

The size of the fish and species would be greatly appreciated, along with the size of the purple tang. If they are all relatively similar sized that will help your cause. If you are trying to add a 2" purple tang to an angry mob of 10" bruisers, that won't go so well. Tank size, aquascape, and feeding regimen will also make a big difference in how they behave towards new comers. We won't attack you for your answer, but we need more information in order to give you the best possible advice.

Knowing what we know so far, I'd say up the feeding, use an acclimation box or make your own out of the egg crate, and go from there. If the purple tang is pretty banged up from the first introduction give him time to recover in the refugium (depending on the size of the fuge) before you attempt to add him to the DT again.

I should add that I keep a tang community (about to upgrade to a 520) and I feed them vigorously throughout the day. It helps immensely with aggression. I have a definite pecking order, and my fish get along great for the most part. My Achilles and Fowleri tangs have their occassional sparring match which always ends up in favor of the Achilles, and that's that.

Of course size matters.... If they are all in a 3000g tank, i'm sure they wouldnt bother each other.

What tangs do your currently have in your tank? Some pictures would help as well. Are they fully mature? From my past experience, adding any fish after they fully mature is usually difficult... You can try and put him into a big bredder net so everybody can size each other up. How long have the tangs been in your tank for? Is there a spot he can call home? Aquascaping play's a big role as well.

I feed heavy. acclimation box sounds like its a lot easier then trying to catch the tangs ( I do have a large trap) that are the same shape and reintroducing them.
The refugium is a 33 long. He will be fine in there for a few weeks.
And thank you for a honest answer and not trying to act like your a God to reef keeping.

It seems like you already know what you're doing so why are you asking a question like this? My 9 year old knows that a new fish will get a beat down for a while ...

You are welcome. Yes, in your situation definitely use the acclimation box. Keep the tang in there for as long as it takes for the others to ignore him. I know of people who have had trouble introducing new fish and they will keep the newbie in the box for a couple of weeks. When it comes time to release the purple tang, do it at night after lights out so he can get his bearings while the other fish are less active.

I would definitely try an acclimation box. Purple Tangs can be mean buggers, so you might not need to do more than that to get him established without further bloodshed.

Would be curious what the 16 tangs are - sounds like a really nice tank!
