Tangs

Now that my 375 is almost done setting up, I'm thinking about the stocking list. The tank is 96x30x30 and has tons of live rock and hiding places. Skimmer is a MRC MR6R, so no worries about waste.

This is the list I will PICK FROM...NOT the list I am getting.

Any feedback and suggestions is welcome. Ones with ? are ones I'm not really sure I would even want for different reasons...size/aggression etc.

SPOTTED CHEEK TANG!! (maculiceps)
fowleri
dussumieri
chocolate (is a definite - it's my favorite fish)
purple
powder blue
achilles
vlamigii
unicorn?
sohal?
barien?
desjardini sailfin?
blonde naso?

Of the tangs you've listed I would choose them all if the tank were large enough. They are one of my favorite groups of fish a lot of personality. I have a Naso, Barienne and Vlamingi along with a yellow and hippo tang. The Barienne and Dusimmeri are similar but the Barienne IMO is much more colorful when mature. Mine has tons of personality and enjoys playing with the other tangs too. He also likes to play with a live sponge which he picks up and tosses it in the water rolling it around. I've never seen a fish do this with an inanimate object. So I would pick from your list the Vlamingi, Barienne and Naso.

vlamigii get huge...you actually have alot of bigguns listed, idkman. maybe just 1 of the 3 large ones you listed naso, sailfin or sohal. if youput a sohal in it will limit the other fish you could add. i would add the naso as ime they never bother anything

maculiceps
chocolate (is a definite - it's my favorite fish)
purple
achilles
desjardini sailfin
blonde naso?

Thats the list I would go with, with the naso a question.

P.S. albano... sick tank dude! but some of the fish look like they could use some food! but keep up the good work man.

Wow, nice! What skimmer do you use on that beast?

I have one of the largest, most kick butt skimmers available for a 1200 gallon reef tank and even when you think you are super-charged with a skimmer, you WILL STILL HAVE NITRATES AND PHOSPHATES if you don't change enough water and or run GFO/GAC like a madman;) Just an FYI since you seem to think the skimmer will take care of all that....

Tampa, I have a vlamingi in my 750 and regret it because he has grown SO large and eats SO much. The tank is also a bit small for him. If you don't give him enough he beats up on my naso and sailfin. He is also so big it really limits how many fish I can put in there.

I like Naso's, they are super chill.

Sailfin's are good for one thing for me, bubble algae. Otherwise, I personally don't care for the look.

My favorite all around on your list:
Powder blue
Naso
SPOTTED CHEEK TANG!! (maculiceps)
fowleri
dussumieri

To be on the safe side, I would only get 2-3 tangs from your list for your size tank.......but again, it's just my personal preference.

Good luck!

I have a Euro Reef RC500 (that I purchased from another RC member), I'm changing about 30g a week on a 600g system. This tank has been up since June 5th '10, but is the combination of 3 130g and a 170g tanks, that are 3 to 7 years old...actually DOWNSIZED from the approx. 800 gallons, I've been running the past 2 years.

If it were my tank I would get these 4:
1.) SPOTTED CHEEK TANG!! (maculiceps) or fowleri or dussumieri or barien
2.) chocolate (is a definite - it's my favorite fish)
3.) powder blue or achilles
4.) Naso

I would also add an orange shoulder tang.

I would say 3-5 tangs would be good for your tank depending on which ones you choose, and if you are willing to keep a heavy bio-load. To ease up on your bioload you could get rid of #1 from the list because that will be your largest tang that will eat the most.

In my tank now I have a Naso, orange shoulder, yellowfin, and manrovia.
The yellowfin has grown from 4" to 10" in about 6 months eats a ton and can make it hard for timid fish to eat. Dussumari's grow at similar rate and also eat a ton. Manrovia tang has great personality loves strong flow and is by far the fastest fish in my tank. Good luck with the tank and I can't wait to see the build thread.

Just remember, just because you have a large tank that is suitable for tangs, it doesn't mean you should fill her to the max with them.

Personally I find those tanks with bigger amounts of smaller fish highlighted with smaller amounts of larger, visually more appealing.

Which skimmer do you have? Do you not like the MRC MR6R? I was actually considering storing the MR6R for my future huge build and using a MRC MR3 on this tank. I was worried that the MR6R is too much skimmer for a 375...and I didn't do my homework on the draw of a 24/7 barracuda. lol

Let me know what you think. Oh I also have the ability to use a SWC 300A rather than the MRC. The SWC 300A utilezes the Askoll pump.

This is what I would go with:

1. Maculiceps(beautiful fish and mine is super docile)
2. Fowleri(gorgeous in adult coloration. Mine is also very sweet natured)
3. Vlamingi(in my tank its a gentle giant...and I do stress GIANT - mines about 12")
4. Naso(as said earlier, very docile and tolerates everything)
5. Barienne(beautiful adult cororation as well and mine is also very gentle)
6. Chevron(great algae eater and gorgeous fish though gets kinda blah as it gets bigger)

I too have a yellowfin and they do grow HUGE FAST!! Mines about 12". Also will be the absolute LARGEST fish in the tank. Mine is a good solid 2" thick.

I have a predominately tang tank having 11 in a 300g w/180g sump. I feed multiple times a day and skim my nutz off! I also run carbon and gfo, but I'm thinking of swapping those out for bio pellets.

Here's my list in my tank:

Vlamingi
Yellowfin
Fowleri
Pale lipped
Maculiceps
Barienne
Blue
Naso
Sailfin
Chevron
Blue eyed bristletooth(only 4" but by far the most aggressive tang in my tank)

Sorry I keep adding to these old a$$ posts, I don't really look at how old the threads are until after I post.............then I feel dumb for bringing up old $#!+. Lol

LOL, actually, sometimes it's nice, because it may remind the OP about a thread, and they will update it. In this case though, the member hasn't been on RC for almost a year now according to his stats.

Personally I find those tanks with bigger amounts of smaller fish highlighted with smaller amounts of larger, visually more appealing.

Likewise. Lots of large fish makes any sized tank look smaller but the small interesting fish coupled with some larger is much more compelling, at least to me.

I fell into this too. I should check the original date (duh).

I agree with these guys. I feel this way about large angels too... only two in the tank.
