Tank Tear Down

Sadly it come time to tear down my 50 gallon tank. It's been a great 4 year run, but the tank is now so overgrown with corals it has become impossible to keep clean. Every time I try to clean it I break off coral branches; there are spots where i can't even get to the glass. Corals are growing into other corals, killing each other or fusing together.

Fortunately big brother 120 is here and almost complete. I've finished the sump and top off reservoirs, the cabinet is 95% done and I'm starting to add water! I still need to build the canopy but the light support system is finished so I'm about ready to go! I hope to start transfecting corals to the new tank Sunday.

Beautiful tank Mike. Both of them! Those stands are really nice! Will you be selling the smaller stand? I'd be interested

Good idea on your light rack using full extension slides. push them back when doing maintenance...nice stands too..

i still remember swinging by and picking up some chaeto when i was first starting out... that tank was awesome back in 2012- never seen a tank so neat and organized... awesome stands

Thanks guys and yes I built both stands. Rik, Gene (gven) has first dibs on the old tank, but if he decides to pass you'll be next in line. The light rack is on heavy duty drawer pulls so it can be pushed back for maintenance. The lights are set on a 15 degree tilt and sit close to the front of the tank (a trick I stole from Greg Carroll), setting the lights up that way causes the corals to grow out towards the front of the tank so you almost get a top down view of the corals as they grow out. I redid the lighting that way in my 50 cube about a year ago and I like it a lot. You get a much better view of the coral, particularly the SPS.

I've seen quite a few tanks get upgraded due to growth of coral and diminishing space. This one takes the cake by far. You sure a 120 is really gonna be enough? ;)
