Tank Temps Drop! Chiller Stuck On

Today I noticed the temps were pretty low on my tank. I typically keep it between 79 and 80 degrees. When I looked, it was down to 77 degrees, and the chiller was still running - thinking it was 80 degrees.

I looked at the history and saw that the temps were as low as 67 degrees earlier in the day.

This is not the first time this chiller failed on me, the last time it would not turn on, now it will not turn off. I'm not going to bother with another RMA, I'm just going to build my own controller for it.

With that said, that is a pretty significant temp drop. Is there anything I need to look out for or do to try to save my livestock? It's a FOWLR tank, I'll list the inhabitants below. Is there anything I can/should do to help if they're stressed out about this?

They seem to be okay right now.

Inhabitants:
1 Yellow Tang
1 Vivid Fancy Clown
1 Banggai Cardinal
1 Cleaner Shrimp
2 Peppermint Shirmp
1 Chocolate Chip Sea Star
9 Snails of various types, mostly turbo.

Nothing to do unless you had due off.

I use my Apex to cycle my chiller now. Also use it to intermittently run water through the line to keep it from fouling.

Do you have it connected to an Apex or other controller?

What size chiller and which energy bar are you using?

I had my 1/2 hp connected to my EB 832 and it would cause my Apex to lock up and the chiller would "stick" on.

I moved it to an Energy Bar 4 and haven't had an issue since.

I'd imagine the bigger chillers would be problematic. I now have a 3/4 HP unit which exceeds even the amp rating on the EB4, so I have to run it off a dedicated 20 amp circuit with the Ranco as controller. Single controllers do worry me, but I see no way around it.

Mine draws 13.3 amps and I've not found a switchable outlet that will handle something that high. Max is 12A on the EB4 if memory serves.

The legacy Socket Expansions may handle it. They handle up to 15A. However, they are not comparable with the EB832. They may be with the EB 4/6/8s, check with neptune systems support

You can run a control line to a higher current switched outlet. There was a link to one somewhere on this site or the Neptune site.

Cold is better than hot.

I assume that this is an internally regulated chiller? If so, will it remember the settings when turned off? If so, put it on a ranco as a second catch and set the Ranco up and down one degree of the chiller settings.

BTW - Inkbird and the temp probes for an Apex are toys compared to a Ranco which are commercial grade.

oh yeah, ranco is only $55.. but you do have to wire in your own plugs, or order one from someone who has already done it... it's also 15 amp.
