Tank upgrade --> 300 Gallon Marineland Project

How do you keep you sand soo clean? great setup!

Thanks!

I use a cat poop scooper to be honest. My Tunze pumps do a good job at drifting the sand around. Every other week I have to move it back around. I have been trying really hard to maintain good water quality and I think that helps a lot too. There are about 200 nassarius snails in there to stir things up a little as well. I went through the tank just before the photos and dug up all the clumps of sand that have formed over the past few months. I pulled out about 8-10lbs of nuggets.

Nice thread. Similar size tank to mine. Is that 2 x 6100s for flow, 2 MJs and the 2 nozzles in the center the return? Just would like to know as I'm redoing my intenral flow and looking to get Tunzes. Tunze has a new line out now so the 6100 is comparable to which new stream? And do you feel 2 streams is enough for your SPS? And closed loops etc?

Cheers. :)

I haven't posted any updates in a while. I have been very busy with all of the activities around the house that my wife insisted I do. I think I have most of those projects done for now.

About 4 - 5 months ago I brought home a powder blue tang from a local fish store. The fish looked good and there were no signs of illness. I put the fish in the tank and I had the normal squabbling of an new tank mate from the other fish. Nothing to be overly concerned about. 3 days later the fish died. I started to see my other fish in the tank start to develop a white fungus on them. Their eyes started to cloud up and and one by one the fish all died. After all of these years in the hobby it finally hit me I was a fool for not quarenteening my livestock. With all the gadgets in the world, something as simple as a QT tank could have prevented this tragedy. I received a call from a friend asking if I needed another tank. I asked what do you have. He said it was a big tank. So, i am thinking he is going to show up with a 125. He pulls in with a 55 gal. and an iron stand. The tank was used for fresh water use and was in great shape. I built a small wooden deck for the tank and painted it gray to match the rest of the room. Drilled a hole in the side of the tank for a drain. I want to be able to shut this tank down when its not in use. I picked up a used marineland 400 hang on the back filter and a 200 watt heater. So, for about 60 bucks in matierials I now have a QT tank.

The tank was restocked with 5 green Chromis two months ago. I lost one of the five and I can't explain why. The other 4 are still doing well. I purchased 6 Lyretail Anthias last week. They have been in the QT. They will stay there for another 3 weeks.

I had a bit of calcium reactor issue last month. My CO2 regluator went bad. I am not even sure what brand it was. I had bought the reactor and the regulator used off of RC. I used it for four years with some minor issues. I took off the fine adjustment valve to clean it. It tended to build up a white hard crust in the valve over time. After it was all put back together I plugged in the selenoid.... BOOM! The reactor blew up and split the glue joint and the top plate of the reactor. After I stopped all the flooding I had to walk away for a few. Now, the wheels started turning to figure out what happened. I can put my finger on two things. The secondary pressure guage had stuck at 6 psi. I have no idea what the actual output pressure was. The fine adjustment needle valve also was closed and still allowed the air to rush into the chambers. So, i have concluded that both items were the cause. I replaced the reactor with a GEO 624. I also purchased a new Reef Fanatic regulator. I love both items and they were both plug and play.

I saw a post by a friend that has recently setup his 300 deep dimension tank. He opened up the teeth on his overflow panels. I was a little concerned with going as big as he did. So, I took out every other tooth. I didn't want to have to add gutter guard. I probably should have used the gutter guard because I have a Chromis in my overflow today. I had a bunch of problems with the water rising so high that you could see the cross braces. I feel this severly affect the surface skimming with the cross braces touching the water. Now, the tank drains better and I only have an issue early in the moring with one brace that touches slightly in one spot. Once the halides come on the brace pulls out of the water.

Aside from normal feeding and cleaning the tank is doing well.

glad to hear you have qt now,, same thing happened to my 100g freshwater tank before i had qt,, good luck trying to start over,,,

I have to be honest, I have played Russian Roulette too many times by not using a QT. Looking at my fish, most of which I have raised up, I would hate to lose them. Not to mention the dollar value. Probably need to set up something similar.

With the amount of money invested in our tanks. Getting a QT set up and running is a drop in the bucket in comparison of what can be lost. I highly recommend it for everyone in this hobby.

So all in all, how do you like the tank. Would you change anything you did, such as flow, aquascaping, stand and canopy?

I'm thinking about getting one of these, what is your opinion of the overall quality now that you have had it for a while?

Hey Bill,

My overall rating on the tank is a good one. I do have a few issues with it. The overflows don't allow for good water circulation unless you modify them. The cross braces sit to low toward the water line. I supposed if I was running 1000 gph through the overflows it might be ok. Since I modified the overflows it works much better now. I would have liked to have had larger holes drilled for the drains. Since the overflows are a limiting factor I guess that isn't that big of an issue. I plan to add some 6105's or 6205's after christmas. My 6100's, sea swirls and two maxi jet 1200's are doing the trick for now. I know I will need more once the tank grows in more. I am happy with my aquascaping. I tried a lot of varations with the rock out of tank. I had an awsome setup on card in my living room. I tried to put it back in the tank that way with water and it just didn't go back in the same. The stand isn't an issue at all. There is tons of space down there. My wife even has enough room to fit all of our outdoor seating cushions under it. The hood, I am 90% satisfied with it. It vents the heat out very well. The only issue is accessing the back corners of the tank. It is really hard to get my hands in there with the back corner supports and the return plumbing being in the way. I still look at the tank and wonder if I should have went with an 8 ft. tank. I guess you'll have that with any tank. I know that this one fits my budget well and the wife is accepting of it now. If I had gone with an 8 ft. I'd probably still be sleeping in the basement :) If you are ever in the area and want to stop over and see it, let me know. Vistors are always welcome.

Mike:

After reading your thread again and also your last post I'm thinking of using both holes in each overflow as drains, both for capacity and as a safety feature. Do you have any problem after you removed the teeth in the overflow with loosing critters? I was thinking of using my dremmel and opening each slot in the overflows to see if that will work. I'm also going to run a hammerhead through 5 sea swirls as a closed loop and run my return from the sump over the top in about 4 returns using a pan world 200.
Oh if you havent guesses yet I picked up the tank Saturday, brand new, still crated from a guy in Indy.

Bill

Congrats on joining the 300 club. I have had a chromis find its way into the overflow. So to answer your question, yes critters will go through. After reading your discription of what you are planning to do. I would think you would have an issue trying to cycle your return lines and your closed loop lines through those overflows. I love the idea, however it seems like it will be problematic. I would think you would be forced to throttle back the jets on the sea swirls rendering them ineffective. I have seen this many times with other closed loop systems that were fed by a Dart pump. I could be wrong but I could see the overflows be a limiting factor. Now, if you open them up like Serpantman did. There may be a greater chance this could work for you. I wish you the best of luck with it. It never hurts to give it a try :)

I have had a chromis find its way into the overflow.

Not really related to the thread but reminds of my chromis. I use a plastic cup to feed the fish, I dip it in the tank to get warm water to thaw the food. Its seem now when I dip in the cup I always come out with a chromis in it. At first it was funny but now its becoming a pain.

I have started another cleaning cycle on the tank. Yes, I have to run through a multi day and multi step cycle to clean everything. I hope to get some updated photos up this weekend.
