The angel thread to end all angel threads: all owners of angelfish in reefs respond!!

I had a False Lemonpeel which never touched a thing in 6 months. Then added a Rusty which only sometimes nipped at my Anthellia. Sorry to say that both have passed due to the Rusty getting some fungus and spreading it to the False.

Now I have a Bi-Color about for 2 months, and it only has nipped at my Kenya trees. No damage seen, but the coral shrinks up for a few seconds, and then opens back up. Planning on a Flame very soon. I have mixed reef with SPS, LPS, Softies, Shrooms, Rics, and Zoas. No clams now, but plan on adding about 5 or 6 pretty soon.

2 Female Watanabei's (Genicanthus watanabei), the one in my avatar I've had for 2 1/2 years and the other about 2 years. Both perfect reef tank inhabitants. Mixed reef, was mostly LPS, now is mostly SPS, Never had any clams.
Reef Safe and good in a community tank (very passive)

adult 10" Imperator in 300g mixed reef, likes candycanes, elegance and bright green frogspawn, not pale green frogspawn, leaves clams, other lps and sps alone, he's quite a character, grunts really loud, very tame, not afraid of anything, will let you pet him, wouldn't trade him for anything

Had two flame angels at seperate times, both seemed reef safe never causing any damage to corals.
Had a potters angel for about 8 months and it did some damage to m clams.
I now have a Regal angel for about 1 yr and I had to remove chalices and he completely ate an open brain. Also picks at zoas.
The regal is also housed with a coral beauty and the coral beauty has been a model citizen thus far.

Flame, Coral Beauty, Gold Flake, Potters, Swallow Tail.

almost 2 years of observation

All eat flake, pellet, mysis, live black worms.

All do not touch clams, sps, lps, mushrooms, zoos and leathers.

Great fish to observe.

3-4 inch coral beauty - kept with LPS, didn't nip, ate pellets/flake and anything else.

5 inch passer angel - kept with LPS, didn't nip. ate anything and everything, the boss of the tank

both fish kept for several years until had to teardown, found new homes

male swallow tail . never messes with anything except puple tang. mixed reef. had him about a year
had flame for 2 years never bothered anything. lost due to power outage along with female swallow tail. she never bothered anything either

make sure to check the notes as well...

more or less what i'm trying to do is: if it eats one particular type of coral, like elegance, or anthelia, call it safe but include that in the notes. If it eats a major group of coral (SPS, LPS, soft), its classified as unsafe. Also see that angels living only with certain corals are noted in the notes section.

update to my old post

Koran (NOT REEF SAFE)

polyp extension on new SPS would diminish after a week. found out why. my stupid KORAN decided to eat the polyps.

i bought a beautiful Blue milli and within 30 minutes it was at full polyp extension, 1 hour later the KORAN was tearing it up. it literally ate almost every polyp within one day. and this was a smaller KORAN.

cherub pygmy angel-5 years, never touched anything
potter's angel-4 years, only picked at feather dusters

Both lived with SPS, LPS, and softies.

Regal Angel
Flame Angel
Coral Beauty Angel

CB - Reef Safe
Flame - nips at clams; otherwise reef compatible

Regal - eats zoanthids and some LPS (e.g. duncans) but ok with leathers; SPS; and other LPS

Koran angel and a flame angel. Had to get rid of the koran because of space but he never bothered anything in my softie tank but I also feed alot. The flame has to be one of my most favorite fish. So beautiful and seems to be very peacful.

Flame Angel, which I owned for 6 months, until I bought some stylophora. It immediately started picking at it, so the fish went back to the LFS

1. Fishers Angel
2. Completely Reef Safe (touch wood)
3. keep with softies such as zoa's rics leathers and lps such as hammer coral and blasto's

I have a cream angel that has taking al liking to coral if it is placed on the substrate--anywhere else it leaves it alone. Now this has to be an out of the box answer for this thread :)
