The angel thread to end all angel threads: all owners of angelfish in reefs respond!!

The same thread is going in General Reef Discussion. PLEASE POST IN ONLY ONE THREAD.

Alright,

I think we are all tired of seeing threads asking about the reefsafeness of angels.

If you own or have owned an angel in a reef in the past, post:

1. What kind of angel
2. Wether it was reef-safe
3. If it was not reef-safe, what did it eat?

I am going to make an excel spreadsheet with a simple yes and no column for reefsafeness of every angel. Then I can easily calculate the percent of a given species that are reefsafe. We can also see if there are any trends in #3 - for example "75% reef safe, except for zoanthids, only %20 safe" or something like that.

Of course this is not foolproof, depends on a lot of things, fish can change, etc, but it's better than nothing.

Define "reef-safe"... to me it means that the fish will pick here and there, but will not devastate a coral, however some people want "full SPS P.E." all the time and would not consider a fish that picks "reef-safe".

Michael's (michael cb 125) signature says it best, "All fish are semi-reef safe."

Cherub Angel - lps/ Softies - Reef Safe

Coral Beauty - LPS/ Softies - Reef Safe

Flame Angel - Not reef safe - picked at sps, plate coral

I've had many different angles over the years in my reef tank, so here we go:

1. Watanbei (M & F) w/LPS, SPS, Softies, Zoas & Clam; 2. Reef Safe; 3. Nothing - 6 months

1. Watanbei (F) w/LPS, SPS, Softies, Zoas & Clam; 2. Reef Safe; 3. Nothing - 6 months

1. Blackspot (F) w/LPS, SPS, Softies, Zoas & Clam; 2. Reef Safe; 3. Nothing - 1 year

1. Lamarck (F) w/LPS, Softies & Zoas; 2. Reef Safe*; 3. Nothing

1. Flame Angel w/LPS, Softies & Zoas; 2. Semi-Reef Safe; 3. Xenia and ocational nip at others, but no visable damage - 2 years

1. Singapore w/LPS, Softies & Zoas; Reef Safe*; 3. Nothing

* Fish died in about a month of being in the tank, so I'm not sure if this fish would have been Reef Safe long term.

LPS = Hammer, Frogspawn, Torch, Bubble & Galaxea
SPS = Misc. Digi's
Softies = Leather, Kenya Tree, Yellow Polyps, Mushrooms & Ricordea
Zoas = Misc. colors
Clam = Crocea (4")

I like falconut's format

1. Flame Angel w/SPS, LPS, Softies & Zoas; 2. Reef Safe 3. Nothing - 2 years

LPS = Favia, Bubble & frogspawn
SPS = Acropora, millipora, motipora, pocillipora, digitata, turbinaria
Softies = Leather, Kenya Tree, Mushrooms, zoanthids. gsp
Clam = Crocea (4")

1. Flame Angel w/SPS, LPS, Softies & Zoas; 2. Reef Safe 3. Nothing - 2 years

LPS = Favia, Bubble & frogspawn, acans, scoly
SPS = Acropora, digita, pavona, cyphestrea
Softies = Leathers, gsp, zoas, mushrooms, sinularia, palys, xenia, anthelia, cespitularia, clove polyps

note: if something is damaged/dying she nips occasionally at the algae growing on the dead/dying part. She has only ever nipped at unhealthy corals

1 conspic,2 regals,1 scribbles,1 goldflake, 1 majestic,1 queen all are safe with SPS in my tank but I would not trust any of them with LPS or Zoo's.

Great Thread and it should be an interesting spread Sheet!

I have a 3" Regal Angel that i've had for about a year, and a 4.5" Beautiful Goldflake Angel that i've had for around 6 months!

I have them both in my SPS Tank becuase i just dont trust the angels with my LPS.

I really like the idea of this thread. I can't wait to see some input on trimacs.

1. Cherub Pygmy: safe -- only had three months -- Zoas, SPS, LPS, softies, never with clams

2. Potter's: safe -- going on 9 months, 2-3" -- Zoas, SPS, LPS, softies, clams, won't even touch macro or nori sheets

Another Coral Beauty, IME Reef Safe with, lots of SPS, LPS, the few softies I've tried but never kept long term, RBTA, clams, gorgs, zoas, sponges. Just at five years now.

All data up to this point entered (i.e. a bookmark for myself).

So far, A LOT more safe than not. Interesting.

FWIW, I will enter my experiences:

Majestic Angel - Safe in a reef for 4 years, but suspected in a clam death (lived with one for months, but seemed opportunistic)

Coral Beauty - was given to me because he was nipping SPS in a mixed reef, he's fine in my softy tank.

1. Potters - not reef safe - 1 year* - ate lps and gorgonians, left softies and clam alone
2. Flagfin - not reef safe - 9 months - nips sps, eats lps, anthelia, xenia, leaves zoanthids and clam alone
3. Majestic - mixed - 2 months, still very small - nips at zoas, starting to hover near sps
4. Cherub - reef safe - one year* - was in with lps, softies, and a few sps, ate nothing

* I lost the cherub in a return pump malfunction and the potters in a heat wave while on vacation. The others are fish I have now.

1.) Emperor (juv.) - safe with gorgonia, sarcophyton, anemones, mushrooms.
2). Majestic - same.
3). Meredith (juv) - same.

Dan

Flame angel - 4 years, LPS and softies...NOT reef safe.

I had this flame with an open brain for years without incident. It recently killed it. My other open brain is fine, as are the rest of my LPS.
