The deadly Blue Reef Chromis

Hello,

Just wanted to share a recent experience. I ordered 5 Blue Reef Chromis from Blue Zoo Aquatics for my 80 gal.

http://www.bluezooaquatics.com/productDetail.asp?did=1&pid=754&cid=15

They are listed as peaceful and my impression for the limited data out there is that they are basically a fancier and more expensive version of the greens.

So basically what happened was after acclimation everything looked great for the first two days they were schooling nicely etc.. Then all of a sudden it's like they went zombie mode.

They first killed my watchman goby. Then my court jester goby. Then they started killing each other. For those who wonder if they were dying from the acclimation I can 100% say this is not the case because I actually watched them chase perfectly healthy fish then start to rapidly rip chucks out of their sides and eat them like a little pack of piranhas. So basically Im down to one Chromis now and the other fish in my tank are just bigger than him (Yellow tang and orange-back wrasse). So take it or leave it but from my experience I think the data out there on these guys is grossly inaccurate. Don't waste your money on a handful but just get one. I'm wondering if maybe they shipped me 5 males or something.. I dunno.

The second part of this is I contacted Blue Zoo Aquatics orders and customer service twice about this with zero response. No thanks for your message no, so sorry tough luck. Zero follow on customer service which left me completely unimpressed. The shipping was good and their selection is nice but they didn't earn any future orders from me that's for sure.

Hope this helps someone save a couple of $$.

I kept these for several years in my tank, bought them as small, maybe 3/4". As they grew to the size of 2" and fat they became a menace (territorial)... Chased several fishes out of the tank (jumping), and making smaller species disappear. Biggest loss was a Japonicus Tang

Additionally they started laying eggs, when doing so they were extra terrible...

I've been ordering from BZA for several years and the most recent experience with customer service echos yours. I bought what appears to be a healthy scoly on their WYSIWYG site and got the following. Will not buy from them again.

IMO chromis should be left out of the home aquarium, they kill each other off slowly and most develop urenoma and die

Wow, that sucks. I've never kept Blue Reef Chromis - only because I'm too cheap to pay $15-20 for a damsel. ;) But I always just assumed they had the same temperament as regular chromis.

Also sorry to hear about Bluezoo. :( I haven't ordered from them in about a year, but all my past experiences were positive. Maybe you all experiencing bad customer service need to go on their sponsor forum and make some noise. They will either have to clean up their act or people will stop buying.

+1 I always had great experience with bluezoo. Sad to hear these stories off no responses

+1 It's been several years since I've seen a group of Chromis viridis arrive at any LFS in my area without at least one showing symptoms of Uronema.

Same here. My favorite part is when the LFS owner feeds the infected chromis to his lionfish in a different tank; possibly infecting that tank as well. ;)

I have been very curious about the blue reef chromis butam going to pass based on your experience. After reading on LA that male bettas are 'Peaceful' and mine is the holy terror in my planted tank chasing EVERYTHING that moves, I am leery of the temperaments listed... I have had other experiences of the temperaments not matching but that is the most recent.

And onto BlueZoo... I have not ordered from them for years after multiple problems. The second to last straw was WYSIWYG fish that said on the page 'Quality Livestock Guarantee' but on the RECEIPT said 'Restricted Species' meaning any death was not covered (it died the day after I got it). It should have said that on the actual listing for the fish, not the receipt, and no customer service did not have any interest in helping me. The last straw was freezing cold snails and hermit crabs. Yes they died... I had some store credit with them that I never used because I did not want to deal with them anymore.

Hmmn, positive experiences with BZ here as well.

Chromis are notorious for winnowing themselves down to a single individual - lots of threads here on the topic. The descriptions on LA, BZ, etc., should be just a starting point and not a replacement for a bit of due diligence on the part of each of us when buying any kind of animal for our tanks. I've not heard of chromis showing inter-species aggression, however, so that's good to know. I have a pair of larger green chromis in my tank and while they regularly try to beat the crap out of each other, they leave the other fish alone.

True. I do not recommend chromis as a group for this reason; as singles, you had better be quarantining since uronema is common with chromis and often means a tank restart after breaking it down (uronema does not require a fish host to replicate). Chromis are damsels.

They don't add enough of anything to a tank that would warrant the hassle of treating one or several 5$ fish IMO

I ordered several fish from BZ this past week. One died after two days in QT. I emailed them a photo and they replied the next day to process a credit for me. I was happy with that.

Yes, a credit not a refund. Which has an expiration. And not all fish are warranted. Not my cup of tea for sure.

Plus the BZ credit cannot be used to cover shipping. To me it's just near useless and a way to get more money from a customer who most likely is already losing confidence on BZ.

Right. Your verb tense needs "adjustment" in my case. :spin2:
